Ex-NHL All-Star

Killed In Horrific Plane Crash

9/7/2011 8:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

0907_russian_plane_BNFormer L.A. Kings hockey player Pavol Demitra -- a 3x NHL All-Star -- was one of 43 people killed when a plane carrying a Russian hockey team crashed outside of Moscow this morning.

Russian officials say TWO people on board survived the crash -- a crew member and a player named Alexander Galimov.

The plane was carrying a team called the "Lokomotiv Yaroslavl" -- which was en route to Belarus for the season opener -- when it crashed shortly after departing from an airport 150 miles outside of Moscow.

Several former NHL players are believed to have died in the crash along with 36-year-old Demitra -- including Karel Rachunek, Josef Vasicek, Brad McCrimmon, Igor Korolev and Alexander Karpovtsev.

It's unclear why the plane went down -- local reports say the weather was not a factor.

Demitra will be missed along with former Anaheim Ducks player Ruslan Salei. I read down the list of players on the plane and I knew about 7 or 8 of them from watching them play in the NHL.

Pavol Demitra was an All Star with the St. Louis Blues, not the Kings. He only played for the Kings one season. Igor Korolev was also a former Blue. He was drafted by the Blues. I get that TMZ is a East Coast/West Coast site but there is a whole bunch of country in the middle that you might want to keep in mind.

How dare you guys leave out Ruslan Salei, and Karlis Skraskins. The latter btw who broke the iron man record for defensman 3 years ago. Two solid stay at home defenseman. Regardless, this is a tragedy of epic proportions. An entire team killed in one fell swoop. I hope this is the last of horrific news for whats been a terrible offseason for hockey.
