Mel Gibson

Why I Want to Make A

Jewish Hero Movie

9/10/2011 8:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

0909_mel_gibson_ex
Mel Gibson has a passion for the story of Judah Maccabee, one of the greatest Jewish heroes of all time, but is not doing the movie as an act of contrition.

Sources very close to Mel tell TMZ ... Gibson does not feel the need to bridge a gap between himself and the Jewish community, because he doesn't believe a gap exists.  They say Mel is adamant -- he does not hate Jews, noting that his lawyers are Jewish, his publicist is Jewish, and he has many Jewish friends and employees.

As for Mel's anti-Semitic rant during his 2006 DUI arrest, Mel has written two public letters of apology and also met with numerous leaders in the Jewish community to discuss where he went wrong.

0909_mel_docs
As for the movie, Mel has wanted to produce it for a decade, telling our sources it's actually a statement against corruption in the church.  Mel believes Maccabee's story parallels the modern church, and he thinks the movie will help force change.

He had to discuss with the Jews to find out where he went wrong? That should have been obvious to him the moment after his tong split. He First gives a drunken tong lashing, then he wants to play the hero for Jews. I suppose he will expect for Jews to rush to the movies, stand in line overnight, and pay premium price for the tickets. What a character!

"I don't think for a second that he's half as bad as he was made out to be by carefully-edited tapes released by his gold-digging Russian ex" Edited or not it's still him on those tapes saying those things to the mother of his child.
No, he is actually far, far worse than what we heard. Can't imagine what his wife had to put up with for almost 30 years. He is an evil, bigoted, woman beating, racist, loser who will never change. He is a joke when it comes to being spiritual or sincere about anything. Time for this hypocritical loser to slink out into the desert and stay there.

Hi folks.

I lurked around yesterday and went around the internet to read most of the articles about this project and to read as many comments as I could. What I came away with was that a lot of people are thinking that these organizations are taking this too far now. These leaders should now do as they preach.

There comes a point when apologies are no longer the question, and the question becomes ‘why’ the recipient is not gracious enough to accept them.

What are they afraid of? Is it that Mel might make a really great epic about their Jewish hero Judah Maccabee as he did with the Passion of the Christ and Braveheart and Apocolyto? Where would they be then? They might have to look for a new whipping post to satisfy their existence.

It’s a shame because there is a really great opportunity for growth here and it’s being replaced by more hate mongering. Is that what these leaders are trying to teach people? To keep the hatred alive? I think this is truly sad to watch.

Personally I was a little disappointed at first, I really wanted to see the Viking movie as his next project, but after reading the ‘Atlanta’ I realized that Mel is really enthusiastic and excited about telling the story of this great warrior Maccabee. Whether it be that Mel is trying to prove once and for all that he wants to reach out to the Jewish community and prove to them he is NOT the ‘anti-Semite’ that they are accusing him of being or that he simply wants to bring to the big screen the story of one of their heros, the Jewish community should embrace it and work with him. If Mel is trying, the least these people can do is wait and see how it turns out. Mel has an excellent track record of for making these types of movies, I am sure he will not disappoint. He has been wanting to tell this story for a long time now.

Many christians especially when they are drunk and angry revert to jew bashing from centuries of the churches painting a picture (incorrectly) of Jews being responsible for jesus death and for most problems of the universe. As jews we just go on and try not to engage in the same hatred. We will survive and when necessary we will fight but not over words alone. Man is from animal and most of the time acts from animal nature. But man also has the spirit of the creator within and can choose the higher ground in all actions at any time. I do not hate gibson because he said something when drunk but because of it I will watch his actions. Juda maccabee was a hero and I see nothing wrong with a movie about him depending on the portrayal of his character. Make the movie mel just be honest about the character and his great accomplishments. That is my two cents worth anyway.

He made a mistake when he was drunk. He apologized for it. His actions since then prove he is no bigot. Haters gonna hate. Everybody else forgive him and move on. It was 6 years ago people. Get over it.

Make the movie Mel.

All the hate from those who dislike you for reasons real or imagined should get a life and get over it. There is plenty of reason to hate those who want to dismantle American freedom and turn this nation into a bunch of socialist drones without freedom. You can include the leftist unions for much of thi*****e.

We waste our lives trying to photograph under the skirts of "young" women, while fomenting hate for various people who slip up and get caught mostly for minor offenses.

Oh why only "young" women TMZ?

The whole antisemitic thing is making me soooo tired. You can't disprove a negative.

It is just like calling someone 'ugly' -- there is just no way to prove or disprove such a judgment.

I really think the groups who jumped on the bandwagon are just using Mr. Gibson for controversy PR and it is just too cheap a shot. Also wondering if they will start pushing their 'blacklists' of people working in the industry who don't support their politics enough.

Foxman is the paid hack for Israel's PAC, so most folks know what to say about his opinion. The rabbi is just, well, very old and maybe a leeetle bit forgetful.

An act of contrition? More like an "in your face" act knowing that his participation in anything relating to the Jewish community is going to cause controversy, generate publicity and piss off Jewish people. And Voila! Of course Mel's Jew-hating sentiments, fsr from being an anomaly are joined in a not so-exclusive bigot club by hatred of Gays, Black people and a decidedly misogynistic attitude that makes women punch lines if not punching bags. As for his lawyer, his publicist and some of his employees being Jewish, at least he's not claiming some of his "best friends are Jewish" too. Screw Mel. Screw his movie. Screw his career.

Wake up Mel...there IS a gap between you and the Jewish community, and you created it. Some of your "best friends are Jewish" - well isn't that special. Face it, your career is over.

1. The Anti-semitic rants ("Jews are behind all wars", "oven dodgers") come from somewhere within Mel Gibson. Apologies and blaming the alcohol and what not is not enough, he needs psychiatric help. 2. If he wants to make a film about corruption in church today, why not do just that?

Another insignificant cry in the darkness? Where on earth did you get the,'best friends are Jewish' quote? Prone to making much up? As much as you insist his career is over, a rather large media group just paid him more money than you are likely to see in your lifetime. That says your view on his career being over is somewhat askew... Do you think?

@aston
Considering Mel Gibson's rather "PUBLIC" moral lapses in character, he's in NO POSITION to criticize the Roman Catholic Church. Making a very "unflattering" film that emphasizes the shortcomings of the Church will make them seriously consider "EXCOMMUNICATING" him which would have a direct impact upon his private church that's staffed with a Catholic clergyman. The church would have nothing to lose by making an example out of him. The "MANIACAL" rantings of his father would certainly help drive the nail in his coffin.
