Harry Shearer

Breaks with Cast

In New 'Simpsons' Demand

10/7/2011 3:05 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Harry ShearerHarry Shearer never told his fellow cast members he was planning on making a new demand to FOX ... and it has both surprised them and thrown a monkey wrench in the negotiations ... sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ.

As we already reported, FOX is asking the entire cast to take a 45% pay cut.  Shearer publicly stated this morning he would take a 70% pay cut in return for some profit participation -- something he says FOX is unwilling to do.

But here's the problem -- we've learned ... up until now all 6 cast members have been negotiating as a group with FOX, and the group NEVER asked for what Shearer is asking for now.

We're also told Shearer's profit sharing offer might actually be economically worse for FOX, given how much money "The Simpsons" currently generates. So, chances are slim the network would accept since it's said the standoff is all about saving money.

One source familiar with the negotiations thinks it's still possible for the group to get back on track ... but, as it was put to us, "Harry is the wild card."

Good, now maybe Spinal Tap will go on tour, and Shearer can get back to playing lead bass.

All the years these guys have put into that show they deserve a cut of the merchandising. I'm pretty sure fox can spare it considering what these guys bring in for the studio.

Education time. It's only people who have lots of money that can hire you and pay your salary. If they own the product, then they call the shots. If a quarter million/episode isn't enough for you, it will be for thousands of others who will take your job. Those who work there are free to take their talents elsewhere - lets see how much you would make then.

Sounds like Harry's the smart one. Yeah they're getting paid, but at the cost of no profit sharing. Sounds like the rest of the cast are desperate.

The Simpsons hasn't been very good since it's tenth year (over eleven years ago!). It is no longer the edgy comedy it once was and it's time has surely past. The us networks never seem to know when to pull a show and call it quits. Imagine if Pythons ran for 20+ years!

They're just voices, hire new people. I am sure anyone would even take 1/10 of what these "Actors" make.

Simple solution. An accident at the nuclear plant cause a radiation leak which damages everyone's larynx when they breathe the fumes. And hence the explanation why all the characters have new voices. PAY ME FOX...

The Simpsons have been a terrible show for years. The only things worse are Family Guy and American Dad.

The Simpsons and Married with Children made Fox. To deny them any $ from the profits is a joke.

I know an actress who broke away and negotiated her own deal apart from an ensemble cast and the rest of the cast never spoke to her again. There was a deathbed reconciliation between this actress and one cast member, but basically it's a s***my thing to do and it does get you branded.

Harry is a genius and deserves whatever he wants. At least his cash isnt going to the cult of scientology.

Amazing that a guy like Sam Simon has profit participation for working on The Simpsons for a few years, at best, and the voices of the characters don't.
Almost every TV show is like that.
The studios throw participation at producers when they are in development, and those producers continue to rake it in long after they have even set foot on the set.
