People vs. Dr. Conrad Murray

Anesthesiologist:

My Patients Fear Propofol

Anesthesiologist -- Dr. Steven Shafer Testifies

**For today's testimony, click to continue below.**

Leading Propofol expert Dr. Steven Shafer --  the final witness for the prosecution -- told the jury,  Dr. Conrad Murray corrupted his patients ... because now, they're all terrified of Propofol.

He told the jury today -- "I am asked every day I'm in the operating room ... 'Are you going to give me the drug that killed Michael Jackson?'"

In his review of Dr. Murray's conduct, Shafer testified he found 17 "egregious violations" of standard medical care that contributed to the singer's death.

* Last Thursday, Shafer told prosecutors he was hired 20 years ago by the company that produces Propofol to calibrate the correct dosing for the drug.
* Shafer said the exact dosage of Propofol is crucial -- because even a slight discrepancy could be the difference between a patient sleeping for a few minutes, and one sleeping for several hours.
* Jurors then watched a video that showed how Propofol should be used in the OR. The clip showed nurses and doctors successfully reviving a patient -- played by an actor -- suffering from a cardiac arrest. Prosecutors were trying to show the jury Dr. Murray was not equipped to handle an emergency situation when he treated MJ.
* Shafer explained to the jury that Jackson probably died because his tongue blocked the back of his throat ... but could have been saved with a simple chin lift.

* As the video was played, Dr. Shafer gave a blow by blow how Propofol is administered.
* Shafer's key points:
-  Infusion of drugs should be done ONLY through a pump to avoid overdosing.
- "Informed consent" is not just a piece of paper but a process in which the doctor informs the patient of all the risks, benefits and alternatives.
-  A verbal consent is NOT binding.
- Record keeping is paramount
- If the patient stops breathing, the first thing a doctor should do... call for help.
* Shafer told prosecutors even when administering "a little bit" of Propofol, guidelines should be strictly followed because the worst disasters occur during sedation ... when doctors "cut corners."
* Shafer said Murray's treatment of MJ is both an "egregious" and "unconscionable" violation of standard care.
* He also called the 15.5 liters of Propofol Murray bought -- about four gallons worth -- "an extraordinary amount" for one person.
* Shafer said Murray's lack of basic and essential monitoring devices are an egregious violation of care and contributed to MJ's death.
* The fact that Murray never kept any records is "unbelievable," according to Shafer.
* He said Murray "left the steering wheel" when he went to bathroom to relieve his bladder calling the doc "quite clueless."
* Shafer told prosecutors there is practically no research on Propofol use to treat insomnia ... adding, "We're in a pharmacological Never-Never Land."
* Shafer took a shot at his former colleague and friend, defense expert Dr. Paul White... telling the court he was "disappointed" to learn that  White thought MJ could have died from drinking Propofol. Shafer went over several studies on rats, dogs and even humans that show the drug doesn't work when it's swallowed.
*  Shafer also bulked at the defense's argument that Jackson may have caused his own death by swallowing 8 pills of Lorazepam ... because the toxicology report showed the amount of Lorazepam found in MJ's stomach was "trivial." According to his calculations, Murray would have had to inject MJ with 10 consecutive shots of 4 mg each to reach the the blood levels in the toxicology report.
* Dr. Shafer debunked another theory by the defense, telling jurors there is no way Jackson woke up and then injected himself with a fatal dose of Propofol. He said people don't wake up  "hell-bent" on grabbing the next dose, calling it a "crazy scenario."

1020_iv_demonstration
* Shafer said the only theory that fits is this: Murray started MJ on a 1000 mg Propofol drip at around 9 AM ... which caused the singer to stop breathing around noon.
* Had Murray been in the room he would have noticed MJ's breathing slowing down around 11:45 AM and could have saved him by stopping the drip.
* In a dramatic moment, Shafer demonstrated  to the jury how, he believed, Murray set up a Propofol drip ... inserting a Propofol bottle into an empty saline bag.
* Shafer said Murray never used an automated pump, which caused the anesthetic to drip at a dangerous rate. The defense claims Murray only gave MJ a single dose of 25 mg of Propofol with a syringe on the day the singer died.
* Defense attorney Ed Chernoff came out swinging during cross examination, challenging Shafer's testimony from Thursday in which he said there is no way Jackson killed himself with either Propofol or Lorazepam. "That's a bold statement isn't it?" Chernoff  "asked " ... "That's what I think happened," Shafer shot back. "Everything you said is an opinion..." Chernoff said... to which Shafer responded, "To say that one should not lie to UCLA Medical Center is my opinion."
* Chernoff  tried to discredit Shafer's testimony ... saying the IV tubing he used in his demonstration was not found at the scene. Shafer said Murray could have easily shoved it in his pocket before leaving MJ's room.
* Chernoff also pointed out Shafer used the wrong size syringe and IV bag in his demonstrations. Shafer brushed it off, saying he didn't think  "size mattered."
*  Chernoff also asked Shafer about his relationship with Dr. Paul White, the defense's Propofol expert... asking him if it's true that he nominated White for an "Excellence In Research" award. Shafer said he did.
* During his cross examination on Monday, Shafer told Chernoff it's hard to know the precise effect Propofol may have had on MJ because the singer had been given so much of it in the 2 months before he died.

This Dr. Schafer was wonderful! Not only did he show just how negligent Murray was in so many areas but he also implied in many ways that Murray's actions and lack of actions could be considered Murder in no uncertain terms! I hope that the Prosecutor will Up the Charges to include Murder 1 or 2. Murray is GUILTY and should never practice medicine ever again anywhere's! I also hope, that as a result of all the evidence and testimoney given so far - that Murray's patients will realize just how imcompent and irresponsible of a doctor (and unqualified) he truly is and be thankful that none of these mishaps occured with any of them!

I wonder what killer murray and his lawyer's reactions were when Dr.Shafer testified. His testimony along with the testimonies of the cardiologist and sleep expert prove that murray is in fact NO DOCTOR AT ALL,THAT HE IS QUILTY AND that Michael's life ended unjustly because this i really can't find a word to describe murray except money-hungry beast.

Now we will see if he gets away with the involuntary manslaughter.

According to the ( California Penal Code Section 190.2 )

The penalty for a defendant (Conrat Murray) , who is founded quilty of "MURDER IN THE FIRST DEGREE" is death or imprisonment in the State Prison for life without the possibility of parole, if one or more of the following special cir***tances has been found under (Section 190.4 of the California Penal Code) to be true.

(1) "INTENTIONALLY and Carrying out the Murder of (Michael Jackson for FINANCIAL GAIN"- $150,000 per month x 12 = to 1,800,000 million per year salary from AEG ...,this proves that "Conrad Murray" really should've been charged by the DA's Office with (Murder in the First Degree)!! He should've not been undercharged with "Involuntary Manslaughter" (IMO)

Dose Of Reality

Murray does deserve the full wrath of the law.

Listed below are just a few problems people have with the stuperfans and why they come off as fools.

What the stuperfans believe:
- Every word that MJ ever said/sang/wrote were complete truth and any interpretation of those words shall only have the most innocent meaning. Also, those words were directed as a personal message to each individual fan and should be considered gospel. As a matter of fact, he may be the second coming of god himself.
- Nothing negative about him is true. As fans we must only accept the things we like and dismiss everything else as lies unless they suit our needs at the time.
- Nothing was ever his fault, at best it was misinterpreted by the media that all cooperated in a secret agreement to conspire against him and ruin his life.
- He didn't have a childhood and spent his first 18 years in misery. In fact, he was the only black kid that ever got a smack or two in the 60's & 70's.
- MJ had one or two surgeries at most and they were related to his scalp burns.
- Michael Jackson always looked as he did in 2009 and he looked normal.
- There were only two accusations of sexual misconduct with minors. It is a complete coincidence that they were both pubesent boys from troubled families.
- Because one set of charges were dropped in an illegal payoff, which in no way implies guilt, and he was acquitted in another trial, all facts, evidence and statements brought forward must be considered 100% false. Also, the FBI found it necessary to investigate MJ for no reason and it continued for 10 years even though they found nothing.
- With the exception of his crippling vitiligo, MJ was completely healthy.
- MJ had completely normal marriages.
- MJ's only drug use was a few Demerol a long time ago that he took for his scalp burns and his substance abuse, though minor and justified, was 100% cured.
- Dr. Murray wanted to kill MJ and it was all part of an elaborate plan to give him dangerous drugs every night for months without Michael ever questioning what was being done to him.
- MJ thought everything was completely normal in his treatment even though there was massive amounts of drugs present, and IV in his inner thigh, a condom catheter on and someone was watching him sleep for months.
- MJ was a completely competent person capable of making decisions about his own health care.

THE "QUACK" ABSOLUTELY DID KILL MJ!!!!

NO, IF, AND OR BUT!!!

THE HATERS SEEMS TO THINK THAT MJ IS ON TRIAL!!!!

IF, YOU BELIEVE ANYTHING THAT THE "QUACK" HAVE SAID TO THE POLICE THEN YOU ARE JUST AS DUMB AS HE!!!!

MJ IS NOT HERE TO DEFEND THE PROVEN LIES THAT THE "QUACK" HAVE SAID ABOUT HIM!!!!

THIS "QUACK" WILL LIE ON HIS OWN MOTHER IF IT MEANT HIS FREEDOM!!!

Dose Of Reality

I disagree. MJ is on trial to an extent. His character will come into play in the defense, his prior medical experiences and his decision to hire Murray and either knowingly or unknowingly accepting the treatment for an extended period of time are all factors.

ALL sane people are hesitant to be anesthetized. All COMPETENT doctors know the very real dangers of using anesthesia even under the best situations & that's why patients are informed of the risks & asked to sign a release!

Michael knew the risks & he searched for a doctor who was willing to ignore his training & walk down this dark path with him.

For me, this trial is a no brainer. Murray was greedy to even accept this sick, sick 'job' & then he was grossly negligent once Michael was his 'patient.' He should be found guilty & serve the maximum sentence. And he shouldn't be allowed to practice medicine ever again.

Maybe one of the experts here who understand English much better than I can help me on with that:
.
We've often discussed the possibility on this site that Michael had actually died long before, even hours earlier than Murray claimed.
Has actually any of the witnesses referred to that problem so far? As far as I can see also Dr. Shafer uses a point of death around noon as a basis for his calculation, or am I wrong?
Maybe I watch too many crime series, but there the coroner can always identify the time of death quite exactly...
.
I still have a VERY hard time NOT to believe that Michael passed away very early on that fatal forenoon and that everything Murray has done later was a cover up.
.
.
(sorry for posting that twice, i.e. on the current trial board, but unfortunately TMZ sends all the comments there into Nirvana as soon as the live coverage is over. I wish they could save the posts somewhere!)

Dr. Shafer was right when he said that Dr. Murray should have advised Michael Jackson's family and employers that he was giving the singer propofol every night. Also we cannot believe Dr. Murray when he says that Michael begged him for propofol because he did not make the singer sign a form of consent.
