"Southland" Star

Gun Drama During LAPD Ride-Along

10/24/2011 5:10 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Michael Cuditz
"Southland" star Michael Cudlitz was riding shotgun with the LAPD during a police ride-along this weekend ... when suddenly, a call came in about a "man with a gun" ... and Cudlitz's car raced to the scene.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... the piece turned out to be an "air soft" gun, which looked like a real firearm, but shoots plastic pellets instead of real bullets. The man in question was not arrested.

The gun drama was just one of several calls Cudlitz's car responded to that night ... while Michael was doing research for his role as a cop on the TNT show.

We're told Cudlitz got some great real-life experience as his unit patrolled Hollywood Blvd. ... while the cops made sure the actor was never in harm's way.

Sources tell us Cudlitz impressed everyone by asking a ton of questions and even puling a double shift -- 12 p.m. until 3 a.m.

Cudlitz isn't the first actor to participate in an LAPD ride-along -- back in July, Jake Gyllenhaal witnessed the aftermath of a gang shooting while he was doing research for a movie role.

Let's see one of these 'celebrities' imbed with the Gang Unit in Compton for a week - then I'll be impressed!

Nice try, TMZ, but 12p - 3a is NOT a double shift in the world of law enforcement. Everyone knows cops work standard 12 hour shifts. So he put in 3 hours overtime. I know cops who do this on a regular basis - not counting the time they have to spend in court.

He's high on Oxy and would not have cared if the gun was real....if he was in character.

Glad to hear the show is sticking around. Probably the best cop drama on t.v. since The Shield (even if it is kind of derivative of The Shield).

Remember when this guy was on Beverly Hills 90210 and he was supposed to be the big football star? They said good luck playing football at Arizona in the prom episode. The only problem was he was shorter than all the girls on that show. D 1 football, yea right. And Brian Austin Green was going to be the next Vanilla Ice!
