Amy Winehouse Drank

Herself to Death

Amy Winehouse
's blood alcohol level was more than 4 times the legal limit at the time of her death ... this according to the coroner who says the singer died as a direct result of over-consumption.

Coroner Suzanne Greenaway described the situation as, "Death by misadventure" ... noting that Winehouse voluntarily pounded an extraordinary amount of liquor in the hours before she died on July 23.

Winehouse -- who battled substance abuse issues for years -- was 27 years old at the time of her death.

Amy's family released a statement ... saying, "It is some relief to finally find out what happened to Amy.  We understand there was alcohol in her system when she passed away, it is likely a build up of alcohol in her system over a number of days."

The statement continues, "The court heard that Amy was battling hard to conquer her problems with alcohol and it is a source of great pain to us that she could not win in time. She had started drinking again that week after a period of abstinence."

"It underlines how important our work with the Amy Winehouse Foundation is to us, to help as many young people and children as we can in her name."

"It means a lot to us and from the overwhelming messages of support we have had since Amy died, we know she meant a great deal to people all over the world.  We want to thank everyone for that and for their continuing enthusiasm for the Foundation."

Why did it take so long to come to the excess alcohol consumption conclusion? They could have found that out with a simple blood test. Surely there were other factors at play. Whatever the cause, Amy didn't seem to have a bedrock foundation from which to draw when times got tough. Cue the parents.

There is no "legal limit" if you're just drinking at home.

They told her not to chug the hard booze, she said no, no, no.

**** the Amy Winehouse foundation... I'm not gonna use the Adolf Hitler foundation to teach my kids about how to teach non-whites.

It's a harsh reality for family to admit to. At least they are acknowledging it somewhat. Man, I am so glad I don't binge drink anymore.

I'd say I'm surprised, but that would be a lie.

This would be sad if people hadn't been calling it years prior to her death. She said no, no, no to rehab, and in turn her body said no, no, no to being constantly abused.

If your kid finally succeeds in drinking herself to death, guess what? You're a complete failure as a parent. And now you want to help OTHERS in the same situation? How delusional.

VERY unfortunate. No matter what your personal views about her are, she was truly talented and shouldn't have went out like that.

An B-A level of 4 times the legal limit, or app. .3, is potentially lethal for anyone, even someone whose never consumed alcohol or done drugs in his life. Thirty years ago I spent several totally non-responsive hours in the hospital with an alcohol induced coma (B-A .28). It happens to college kids on binges, or anyone on a binge, all the time. Alcohol is a poison in large amounts. Any one of us could die if we did something stupid like drink a 40 in an hour and a half, even if we were otherwise clean. That's where I think the family has gone wrong in their press release. There message should be that benders can kill you no matter who you are or how healthy you are.

It took them this long to find out her BAC was 4 times the legal level??? It's been 4 months!!

I don't think her parents are in denial. They are in grief. And yes, if she was binging on booze, she may very well have been maintaining a baseline .15BAC and, therefore, could finish off a bottle to get to sleep and end up at a fatal .4. Had she not built up that baseline over the prior days, finishing off the bottle might have been fatal. I think that is what her father was getting at. While self-destructive, this was not a deliberate overdose. While irrational, it was not suicidal.

All that said, I have no clue why it took 4 months do do the math and figure out her blood alcohol level and its lethal effect.
