Amy Winehouse
's blood alcohol level was more than 4 times the legal limit at the time of her death ... this according to the coroner who says the singer died as a direct result of over-consumption.

Coroner Suzanne Greenaway described the situation as, "Death by misadventure" ... noting that Winehouse voluntarily pounded an extraordinary amount of liquor in the hours before she died on July 23.

Winehouse -- who battled substance abuse issues for years -- was 27 years old at the time of her death.

Amy's family released a statement ... saying, "It is some relief to finally find out what happened to Amy.  We understand there was alcohol in her system when she passed away, it is likely a build up of alcohol in her system over a number of days."

The statement continues, "The court heard that Amy was battling hard to conquer her problems with alcohol and it is a source of great pain to us that she could not win in time. She had started drinking again that week after a period of abstinence."

"It underlines how important our work with the Amy Winehouse Foundation is to us, to help as many young people and children as we can in her name."

"It means a lot to us and from the overwhelming messages of support we have had since Amy died, we know she meant a great deal to people all over the world.  We want to thank everyone for that and for their continuing enthusiasm for the Foundation."

I am Spartacus

she died from drinking too much alcohol. Please explain why marijuana is illegal and alcohol is legal because you never heard of someone dying from smoking too much weed like you hear all the time with alcohol.

Its a pity this rich, bueatyful, talented woman did not value herself as much as her fans did. Addicts hurt everyone around them. You have a choice. You always have a choice. She really could have chosen not to drink. Honestly it was an option. At some point you have to grow up and take your thumb out of your mouth or get your Darwin Award.

I actually have some new found respect for her. I know alcohol is a drug too but at least she was trying, RIP.

Lol I loved how the family went on and on about her not OD'ing on drugs. True she didn't overdose on pills or injectibles but the died of drugs none the less, alcohol is a drug of sorts and while she didn't die exactly as people would have expected, drinking herself to death was most peoples second guess and she delivered on it with flying colors. So Contrats Amy on living up to all out expectations.

I believe I read that Amy suffered from bipolar disorder. That could have been the real demon that did her in. We've had experience with it in my family. Substance abuse is common as a way to find relief from racing thoughts and anxiety. Getting the medications correct to find stability is tricky and must be coupled with superior personal care -- nutrition, rest, exercise. So sad.

Latta people in denial on here. Being drunk all the
time and thinking that makes you an expert on
alcoholism just proves you're stupid. The ones that
nearly died, successfully completed a rehab, and
have stayed sober for awhile are the ones who
know. Alcohol blood levels that are toxic enough
to cause death vary widely due to age, sex, weight,
overall condition of other organs, and several other
things. Her liver could have been so damaged from
either or both drugs and alcohol so that it would take
several days to process it. Her parents are probably

Too bad Amy didn't just use medical marijuana. She would still be alive even if she used lots of cannabis. She had great musical talent and is gone much too soon.
Great book on medical marijuana: MARIJUANA - Guide to Buying, Growing, Harvesting, and Making Medical Marijuana Oil and Delicious Chocolates to Treat Pain and Ailments by Mary Bendis. This book has great recipe for marijuana oil and tasty, yummy chocolates!

It was the demon in her head that killed her. That demon was so strong it made her drink everyday. I wonder what that demon or who that demon was?

My question is - which legal limit? 4x the US legal limit of 4x the UK legal limit.

Either way, it is a ridiculous, stupid amount of alcohol but I curious what the actual BAC was.

My guess is that she damaged her internal organs while on the hard sh*t so they could no longer even handle just the alcohol and prescription meds she was on at the time of her death. They should make Lindsay watch in on an autopsy of a person who has OD'd while she is at the morgue so she can see how much she's roughing up her body on the inside. If her teeth are rotting away you can bet she's showing signs of liver damage and heart damage...heart disease is even in her family, no? She keeps trying to botox away the faces of meth look so she can stay in denial, but maybe that image would haunt her enough to get clean. It's a shame about Winehouse, because she seemed to be at least trying to beat her demons even if it was half heartedly unlike Lohan who does not even try just denies, denies, denies. I think Amy could have been saved had she been convinced to get some external help more like Britney.
