'X Factor'

Unintentional Reuniter of

Sweaty '80s Glam Band

10/28/2011 4:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

He lost out on $5 mil ... but "X Factor" reject Dexter Haygood got one hell of a parting gift from the show ... a chance at a reunion with his old band -- the first all black rock group ever featured on MTV.

Haygood was the frontman of the funk/rock sextet known as Xavion -- they were huge in the '80s ... for a minute ... even briefly touring with Hall & Oates.

But the guys went their separate ways ... and completely lost touch with Haygood ... unaware that he struggled with substance abuse and wound up on the streets.

So, when Haygood appeared on the show as a contestant ... the other band members were shocked -- and most of the guys instantly reached out to their old friend.

Now, TMZ has learned ... the guys are hoping to get the whole band back together in an effort to put together some reunion shows ... or even perform on "X Factor" ... if producers are up for it.

TMZ spoke with Dexter ... who tell us, "I'm really excited to work with my old band," adding "I'm more than hopeful that 'The X Factor' will invite us to perform on the finale."

Fingers crossed.

he was confused when he got the boot because Nicole picked some horrible songs for him to sing so he thought she was looking out for him when it turns out she didnt know what the ckfu she was doing

I spent the 80s in the 70s and skipped right over to the 90s. This is a good example of why.

Xavion? Wow, I remember them. Much Music played a lot of this song back in the day.

Maybe he should have sang instead of screaming the whole time on X Factor and he would still be there...

Hey .. remember this was the 80's and for that time period, I think they were pretty darn good. Sound a little like Prince. I wish only the best for Dexter. Good luck!

Ya Mon

Yess that video rocked, way better than the Usher the "handicap space stealer" wannabes or that re-hashed lame rap downs syndrom looking black kid on the show. I want to see Dexter back in that band so he can shoot up one more time, and do a Prince scream to the grave!

The thing about Haygood is that he had promise and he is a proficient musician, but the issue is that you can't bet this as your ticket to success for financial stability. He's competing against people that have a stronger vocal range and better defined persona, while he's inconsistent from performance to performance. Nicole had to unfortunately base the decision on what the competition was about. In the process ending her partisanship for him, just because she doesn't want him to revisit vagrancy.
Unfortunately his success in this competition was built on sympathy in many ways. He can sing, he can compel his audiences through a strong yet undefined stage presence. Like Chris Rene he seems to have trouble with consistency. However Rene was spared because the judges are subconsciously aware, of his universal appeal amongst the programs audience.

The judges didn't seem to be conscious of the fact, that they could have used their connections to find him employment, or have him work in the industry in some capacity. If this competition is not about making persevering from rock-bottom Dexter would win. However X-Factor is just another variation of American Idol of course with Simon and Paula probably having heavier salaries and more flexibility in their contracts.

bigFan of Dexter

It would be awesome to see Dexter with his band perform on the X factor !!! Especially if Dexter could sing his heart out like he did in his first audition *this is a man's world. His voice could have compete against Josh Krajick...

I met this guy at the Fayette Mall in Lexington, Ky in 1984 the night after they opened for Hall and Oates at Rupp Arena.
