'X Factor'

Yes, Our Contestants Lip-Synch

But Other Shows Do Too

11/4/2011 10:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

An "X Factor" performance last night revealed there's clearly lip-synching going down ... but a rep says the show is not alone, and it happens more often than you think.

During the opening song -- performed by all the contestants -- one singer started moving his mouth way after you could hear his voice. Oops.

An "X Factor" rep tells TMZ the vocals on all ensemble performances (not individual ones) are "pre-recorded" ... in order to give the contestants more time to work on competition songs.

The rep added, "This is also no different to what other competition shows do for ensemble performances."

The rep did not mention any of those "other" shows by name.

I work on the Voice on NBC. For the record,no one ever lip-synchs on our show. Not the contestants performances, not the group numbers, not the coach performances.
Ever. Never. Ever.
It would also be completely unfair in a competition to ever auto tune any of the contestants in any way ever. So for the record,we never ,ever do that.
I wish we could fix some of them sometimes, but we don't.
So suck it XFactor!

During the Stereo Hogzz survival song, the performance starts with the lead singer singing and the rest of the group singing backup vocals. At about a minute into the performance, the backup vocals start again, but the backup singers mouths are not yet moving. So much for the X-Factor rep saying the individual performances are not pre-recorded.

In reading the article carefully, it is ONLY the group performance that is pre-recorded. That is a given for any show and acceptable these days. As long as the individual competitive performances are live, I can live with that. Janet Jackson started the entire trend of lip "singing" decades ago. These days many of the young performers are dancers who "sing" a bit. As the young contestant proved during this past weeks performance of Bobby Brown songs...it is difficult to sing and dance with intensity. I enjoy X-Factor immensely. Anyone of the finalist could launch successful careers.

How has NO ONE noticed that Stereo Hoggz were lip syncing during their SURVIVAL performance?! to me that is WAY more of a big deal than the first performance being lip synced.

If you re-watch their performance - you see the backup singers have the mic no where near their mouths during the second or third line of the song that they are meant to sing.

if any of the performances should be completely authentic - it should be the ones where the acts are singing for survival.

American Idol does it when the ensembles perform. They made a statement about it a few season's back...I'm actually pretty sure TMZ are the ones who reported it.

the worst was Stereo Hogs lip synced the end survival song!!! watch it again. there were a couple of times the guys forgot to lift their mics!!! this is not a singing show. it's a spectacle. it's extremely hard to do dancing and singing at the same time but stereo hogs seemed to have no problem. if you have to sing for your life, you should actually sing, not play a prerecorded session!

and the BEST live singers who REALLY sung live and were sabotaged and NOT shown ILLUSION CONFUSION were screwed by xfactor for reasons i wish would be looked into, third party told me their SABOTAGED performance at judges house(where Paula's face AND "on the fence" comment WAS edited in while they put an interveiw of them talking OVER their performance.and Simon told them at Miami audition"you are the best group in the competition by far" ALSO not shown and they rocked it with 2 standing ovations, why was xfactor so threatened by this group?

sure, lip syncing is okay when it's not about competition, but when they're singing to stay in the competition (are you hearing this, stereo hogs???), they should have to sing for real! it's funny how everyone is razzing Bell but that was an ensemble piece to fill time. the stereo hogs thing is egregious because it was a competitive event.

Well, like my momma always said "if everyone else jumped off a bridge would you do it?" ... give me a break, these "reality" talent shows are just as phony as all of the other "reality" shows out there. If they want a contestant to win what's to keep them from manipulating their audio so their "lipsynched" performance comes off as better than anyone else that night? They got caught now they should just pack it up and go away.

After seeing and hearing about the lip sync on "live" X-Factor, I'll find other entertainment for the evening.

I've seen the same mishap on American Idol during a group performance. It's annoying, but I get it.

My take is these people pre record all songs in a studio and its played back during performance but the performer signs along with it, thus the echo effect in everyones voice. Otherwise we would all see that most of these people can't sing there way out of a paper bag. Talented they ain't.

If they are lip synching then the backdrop and all the backup signers are drowning out the poor performers. The Stereo Hogs couldn't sign there way out of a paper bag but the back up singers make them sound awesome. Thus, they could sign on a live mic since they were being over mic'ed.
