Eddie Murphy

Bails Out of Oscars

After Brett Ratner Resigns

11/9/2011 11:13 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Eddie Murphy is showing the ultimate solidarity with good friend and producing partner Brett Ratner by quitting the 2012 Oscars, which he had agreed to host.

Ratner bailed -- though he may have had no choice -- after making a homophobic remark last week at a screening of "Tower Heist," which stars Murphy.

Murphy says he wanted to do the show and never says squarely he's bailing because Ratner is gone, but his statement leaves little doubt:  "I was looking forward to being part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I'm sure the new production team and host will do an equally great job."

Looks like the Motion Pictures Academy does better with old people -- they're generally a lot safer.

Does anyone outside of the 'business' really give a care? I don't know one person in the rest of the US who cares at ALL about who directs, hosts or produces. God these people are so sel****grandizing and focused so much on themselves they can't actually get off their behinds to DO anything.

................Is the EARTH off its axis?.................
Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, David Letterman and Billy Crystal etc. didn't "W A L K" from their obligation to the Oscars. Has the "talent" shrunk or has "stupid" escalated?

Eddie Murphy would have sucked hosting the Oscars.

Bring back Billy Crystal. He was the only truly funny host the Oscars have had since Johnny Carson.

I am not surprised... Eddie Murphy isn't exactly a great guy and he certainly isn't the type to stand by any commitment he made. Personally I am glad he is out. Bring back Steve Martin!

This sounds more like Eddie Murphy hasn't received a "definitive" response from the Academy and he's "graciously" willing to step aside, if they object to his professional relationship with Brett Ratner. He just doesn't want to do anything that will adversely impact his current movie that has just been released. Right now, publicly sacking Ratner isn't in his best interest. However, like many people, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE EDDIE MURPHY HOST THE OSCARS!!! He shouldn't be "penalized" due to his partner's "insensitive" remarks!!!

People are sick of gays anyway. I'll bet half the "tolerant" Hollywood types are anti, anyway.

As well he should. I was surprised that the Academy had forgotten his bad behaviour the night he lost for Supporting Actor. Stupid to ask 'him' in the first place.
Let him go off with Mr. Ratner on the night of the Awards. And, if they can't accept the fact that Show Business is filled with gay men and women.... as is the world, for that matter.... then get OUT of the industry. Hardly a great loss in ANY respect.

Murphy who? thought he died. He will not be missed for a big, wrong decision.

Good riddance! I hope Ellen hosts because that would be the ultimate kick in the face.

Why must the "gays" control everything? Bring back the good ole days.....

I got a problem with slinging the term "homophobic." The suffix "-phobic" is fear. It may be a gay slur (that EVERY teenager uses nowadays, sorry) but it's not out of fear. THis term should not be hijacked by the media or LGBTs to mean something it is not.
