Natalie Wood Investigation

Exercise in Futility

11/22/2011 6:00 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Natalie Wood & Robert Wagner

Sources in the L.A. County District Attorney's Office are scratching their heads over the Natalie Wood death investigation, because they say there's no way the D.A. is going to prosecute Robert Wagner or anyone else.

Although the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. says Robert Wagner is not a suspect, it's pretty clear -- as the last person to see Natalie Wood alive --  he's the target of the probe.

Under California law, even if Wagner accidentally pushed Natalie into the dark water ... the most he could be charged with is involuntary manslaughter.  But here's the problem -- there's a statute of limitations of 3 years for that crime, so prosecutors would have had to file charges 27 years ago.   Ditto voluntary manslaughter, which has a statute of limitations of 3 years.

The only crime for which anyone could be prosecuted is first degree murder, because there's no statute of limitations.   Remember, there are no possible witnesses other than Robert Wagner.  Short of a bizarre confession, D.A. sources say there's no chance of a prosecution.  BTW, there's a 6-year statute of limitations on second degree murder.

As for why the Sheriff is investigating the death ... one D.A. source said, "It's an exercise in futility.  I just don't get it."

Boy, criminals must really love living in California especially the rich and famous. LA California legal system is all screwed up. No wonder there's no justice there. Just think, if Conrad Murray had waited 3 yrs after MJ death, he too would have never been charged with so called "Involuntary Manslaughter".

People who commit crimes, or repeated crimes get to walk b/c there's no room in prison. Probation/house arrest is a joke in Cali! The only criminals who are found guilty of a crime and goes to prison are Latino/African American's and poor White people who can't fight or beat the system because they are stuck with court attorney who just doesn't give a damn or care. Poor defendent and even innocent people are the ones in California that fulling up the cells and keeping out the rich. Just ask Lindsay Lohan.

who dat

I'm pretty sure, the LA district attorneys office would have blown it, even if they had the evidence. At least those who paid attention will know what a douche robert wagner was. Christopher Walken isn't far behind him. The captain, well he is an A-hole to. They all had a moral responsibility to help that woman. If there is a hell, they all deserve eternity.

There is no statue of limits on the truth !!!!

And at this point this all about all these people want the truth as to why she had to have drowned and died in her worst nightmare...We already know about the bought and payed for type justice system that rules in LA .

and the "Is not a suspect" Robert Wagnor got away with murder like a hell of lot of hollywood stars have done with a little help from the studio heads (the Bully Boys )murder, rape, extortion, and finanical ruin of anybody that crosses thems....if you sign your soul over to them , you CAN get away with murder but if you cross them they will ruin you.(like they are trying to do to Mel Gibson, and like they tried to do to Robert Taylor, and sooooo many others....
Sign over you soul and be like Lindsay Lohan , who I believe could get away with murder and still walk...

Isn't it amazing how celebrity and money washes everything? Robert Wagner clearly is culpable in Natalie's death...whether he is punished is irrelevant since our knowing this is very damaging. But it irks me that they will reopen a 30 year old case but not investigate Rebecca Zahau's hanging death in San Diego, there again her boyfriend's corporate power and influence trumps everything. Even the premier forensic MD in the country thinks her death was not suicide. So sad and corrupt.

I think that number 1 has some good points. It could very well be that Natalie knew about the hart to hart team, and that when they argued that night on the Speldor she told Robert Wagner how dare she accuse her of anything and about being Jealous look at you, and said what told him what she knew--he exploded in more anger, and then something very bad happened. She did not get all those bruises on her from just floating in the water. The cops did a bad job and were star struck at the time. Also there was not the high technology to decide things as there is now. Had it gone to trial he might have still been found not guility! Who knows but at this late date it all seems rather useless. I Just hope Karma gets them all. They let that poor woman drown in the water when they could have helped her!!

More proof that the CA justice system is out of control. Now they're wasting tax payer money on a case that has no new evidence
