Montel Williams

Reinstating DRAFT Could

Stop Bad Military Behavior

Former talk show host Montel Williams tells TMZ ... "making" U.S. citizens join the military could help PREVENT soldiers from acting like the "bad apples" featured in the urination footage.

Williams -- a retired Naval officer who started with the U.S. Marines -- hooked up with us via satellite this morning and explained that our soldiers in the field, including the guys in the footage, are likely stressed out from carrying such a heavy workload.

"The stresses must be getting to the point that it caused some of this ... why don't we spread out that stress and start making more people put on the uniform and defend this democracy?"

Williams claims only .25% of the U.S. population is serving in the military ... and says, "Maybe it's about time that this country wake up and understand that we can't put the pressure of defending our democracy on less than .25% of this entire population."

The problem is that they are not actually defending our country, regardless of individual soldiers' good intentions. They are defending profits of a few companies. Our Pentagon and State Department have been entangled with such corporations for at least many decades. There is a lot of money in war, preparation for more war, and maintaining dictators and bad status quo around the world. Nowadays, such wars and military actions are actually making us less and less safe because astonishingly, other people don't like getting bombed and killed and maimed and burying their loved ones any more than we do. A true war of defense would not require a draft or dangling financial bribes in front of unemployed volunteers. But our government has not waged a war of true defense in my lifetime.

Today, our wars are still routinely waged against people who are actually defending their own homes, in places where our soldiers don't know the language, religions, history, or culture. If a much bigger country were doing that to us - everyone would clearly see how pointless it is for such foreigners to come in and justify their actions as "helping" us. We can solve our own problems, and so can everyone else. And we certainly would have zero tolerance of the disrespect for the dead shown by this group, which is undoubtedly just the tip of the iceberg. These soldiers also put others at risk by their foolishness. This is the kind of thing that changes neutral locals (trying to just live while two groups of armed men shoot it out) into people who will look for a chance to sabotage the foreigners and from whose ranks will come more fighters.
-
The sad thing is that our overwhelming military budget not only is not defending us but also is driving our economy into the ground. More than half your federal income taxes are going for military adventures, while veterans benefits are routinely cut. So the unemployed and underemployed enlist to risk life and limb for the oil companies, and the wars they wage create more and more unemployed.

Only people who have served their country should be called a "citizen" and only a "citizen" can be qualified for any governmental assistance.
