Montel Williams

Reinstating DRAFT Could

Stop Bad Military Behavior

1/12/2012 10:32 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Former talk show host Montel Williams tells TMZ ... "making" U.S. citizens join the military could help PREVENT soldiers from acting like the "bad apples" featured in the urination footage.

Williams -- a retired Naval officer who started with the U.S. Marines -- hooked up with us via satellite this morning and explained that our soldiers in the field, including the guys in the footage, are likely stressed out from carrying such a heavy workload.

"The stresses must be getting to the point that it caused some of this ... why don't we spread out that stress and start making more people put on the uniform and defend this democracy?"

Williams claims only .25% of the U.S. population is serving in the military ... and says, "Maybe it's about time that this country wake up and understand that we can't put the pressure of defending our democracy on less than .25% of this entire population."

In todays world people like to kill..like to control other living things, so why not? The men and women that enjoy toting around a gun and causing pain to others should be the ones over there. At least they'd kill for a purpose or reason.

Except for the fact the military is already 'overmanned' and they are cutting thousands of mid-career service members within the next year. I know for sure 3,000 sailors will be cut by September 1st. So, where in the hell are they going to make room for all these new members if a draft is instated? Sure as hell not going to cut my husband's job for some newb who doesn't even want to be there...

Many countries mandate military service. Military service instills discipline, respect for authority, honor of country and builds character in most. Two year committment could not hurt a society of overindulged, self centered young adults.

Yea it has nothing to do with the fact that the dumbest .25% of the population are the ones that join.

Hell yeah, bring back the draft, why not. There should be a mandatory 3 years to do in whatever branch they choose once in selective service, after an honorable discharge 3 years of college free of charge.

Sending people into war that don't want to be there can end in a disaster. If you send someone who can't take the pressure at war can end up shooting themselves or others. So yea great idea.

First there are the standards which the military has. As a sargeant pointed out to me when I was in the Air Force during a conversation we had when I asked why wouldn't a basketball player be in the military. He mentioned the costs involved in making uniforms and boots to fit him. If the draft comes back, then student deferments for college won't be far behind. The draft won't prevent AWOL's, article 15's and dishonorable discharges. Yet the dishonorable discharge will be the equivalent of street cred. Montel must have forgotten how tv crime shows in the 1970's had plot lines featuring that Vietnam vet who had some pieces missing out of his jigsaw puzzle.

Montel is slightly off on his estimation of who's in uniform, right now, it's more like 1% of the population are in uniform. I was drafted in the 60's, I didn't like it, but it did change my life and my direction.

A draft served different purposes, one being that those that take their freedoms for granted and let someone else do the dirty work would have a share of the load too.

People have come to believe that they can be born to a nation and the nation serves them indefinately, those that have served at least contribute to the society. Look at it any way you want, but I would rather be a veteran and have served, than one that has rested on the laurels of those that went before.

How about mandatory military service for all adults, male and female, unless truly medically unfit to serve. I bet it would help get rid of some of the lazy, entitled attitude many young people in this country have.
