NHL Star Taylor Hall

GNARLIEST Hockey Injury Ever

Revealed in Photo

1/19/2012 3:05 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Taylor Hall head scarNHL superstar Taylor Hall is lucky to be alive after an ice skate ripped his skull open -- and his team just tweeted the first photo of the nasty ... NASTY aftermath.

The Edmonton Oilers star forward suffered a Frankenstein-like gash Tuesday night when he fell during warmups, and collided with a teammate who couldn't avoid slamming his skate on Hall's head. He needed 30 stitches to stop the bleeding!

Hall -- who's been out of the lineup since the injury -- was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. NHL players are required to wear helmets during games, but not warmups.

The Oilers are now advising their players to wear helmets -- while other teams are making it mandatory.

Bob Johnson

Actually Borje Salming's injury in 1986 was worse and more gory looking than this one. I've provided a link to the photo.

That's nothin'. Look up Johan Franzen's injury against Phoenix in the playoffs. That's why we call him Franzenstein.

Obviously you don't know about Clint Malarchuck whose throat was literally sliced open by a skate in the middle of the game. He was just bleeding all over the ice. Check it one youtube, its freaky as all hell.

I hope he recovers quickly. This could've been alot worse! You would think with all the precautions people are taking today they would just naturally wear helmets. When will they learn? I love hockey but they're pretty slow with making things mandatory that involve safety!

Gnarliest? I think not......how about Clint Malarchuks cut carotid artery or Borje Salmings 250 stitches?

30 stitches is nothing. Google ex Toronto Maple Leaf Borje Salming to see some real stitch work.

This would be gnarly except that just this month a high school kid had their spinal cord snapped by an illegal check to the back and being driven into the boards during the illegal check.

But at least they made the dirty player sit out the full two minutes. Seriously, a penalty that results in sending someone to the hospital for anything other than precautionary measures should automatically get you ejected.

i just hope they change the rules so they have to wear their helmets during practice - it really is an un needed hazard in an already dangerous sport, he could have avoided or at least really lessoned the severity of this injury - and believe me i'm not criticising taylor, just want to make it a little safer for players

Not sure the NHL should mandate helmets during the warmup but I know if I were lucky enuff to have the talent to play at this level and making this mush cash Id be doing everything in my power to protect myself. Aaron Ward @ TSN has the best solution IMO: Grandfather it in like they did the helmet law in the early 80s. Currently the NY Rangers are the only team do mandate helmets in the warmups but after this Im sure there are many GMs, Steve Tambellini of the Oilers being one of them, looking to institute this. Not an Oiler fan what so ever but Im glad the injury wasnt worse. Scary indeed
