Joe Paterno

In Serious Condition

1/21/2012 3:33 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Joe Paterno
Joe Paterno, the legendary former coach at Penn State University, has suffered health complications and is in serious condition ... this according to a rep for the Paterno family.

The spokesperson released a statement, saying in part, "Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications. His doctors have now characterized his status as serious."

His son Jay tweeted, "I appreciate the support & prayers. Joe is continuing to fight."

Another son, Scott, responded to a report that JoePa had passed, tweeting, "Dad is alive but in serious condition. We continue to ask for your prayers and privacy during this time."

Onward State, a student-run newspaper on campus, reported Saturday he had been taken off his respirator. The Citizens Voice, a newspaper in nearby Wilkes-Barre, PA, reported Paterno's wife Sue summoned close friends and longtime staff members to State College hospital.

Paterno was the coach at Penn State for 46 years, until he was famously fired by the school last November following the sexual abuse allegations against his former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky.

So many people loves Joe. Thanks to Penn. St. It is causing him to give up. You all took away what he believed in, that is foot ball. I hope to hell the people that fired him don't sleep at all. They took his lively hood away. Camcer is bad, I no. About what Penn. St. people did, didn't do him no good. Sending all my prayers to you Joe.

Wow, lots of Paterno nut huggers here. Not wishing death on the guy or anything, but he was hardly innocent in this whole Sandusky thing. By his own admission, he could have (and should have) done more to prevent the things that happened in that locker room. But some PS die hards just can't seem to look beyond the whole kindly old man/legend persona and realize this is a case of doing the right thing or the wrong thing. Maybe he fulfilled his legal obligations involving the crimes, but Paterno did not do the right thing by allowing Sandusky continued access to those locker rooms for over ten years after the initial reports of what Sandusky was doing behind closed doors.

I still can't get around the fact that Paterno said he didn't call 911 because he didn't want to bother anyone on a saturday. Young boys were being sodomized in the Penn State showers and he didn't want to bother anyone? Paterno reminds me of the catholic priests who turn their head the other way because they don't want to deal with the sexual abuse that they know is being done to these young boys. I'm sorry he is sick, but I have no respect for Paterno as a man

No sympathy for this worm who allowed young boys to be molested for years because he turned his back. Wouldn't be surprised if he's using terminal illness to avoid criminal charges and if not, karma is doing its job.. he deserves no peace in death.

This is truly a tragedy. A man we all thought we knew, who brought greatness to Penn State should die with his legacy destroyed. My sincere prayers to his family and friends and those who loved him.

I'd like for those of you who support him to look those kids in the eye and then tell me how you can say it wasn't his fault. He may not be the one raping, but he knew what was going on and turned his back on those kids.

DIE!!!!!

...and to those scrambling for an excuse to minimize his role the rape and abuse of those boys... KARMA IS A BITCH, the next rape may be you or your child [GOD forbid you have a child] assuming you haven't already raped your kid.
