Joe Paterno

In Serious Condition

1/21/2012 3:33 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Joe Paterno
Joe Paterno, the legendary former coach at Penn State University, has suffered health complications and is in serious condition ... this according to a rep for the Paterno family.

The spokesperson released a statement, saying in part, "Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications. His doctors have now characterized his status as serious."

His son Jay tweeted, "I appreciate the support & prayers. Joe is continuing to fight."

Another son, Scott, responded to a report that JoePa had passed, tweeting, "Dad is alive but in serious condition. We continue to ask for your prayers and privacy during this time."

Onward State, a student-run newspaper on campus, reported Saturday he had been taken off his respirator. The Citizens Voice, a newspaper in nearby Wilkes-Barre, PA, reported Paterno's wife Sue summoned close friends and longtime staff members to State College hospital.

Paterno was the coach at Penn State for 46 years, until he was famously fired by the school last November following the sexual abuse allegations against his former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky.

Paterno died Sunday morning, the family announced. He was 85.

Joe, we love you. You have been such an insparation to me as well as all of your fans. It saddens me to hear that you are in such poor condition. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. You are a great man and I pray for your happiness. Please get better soon, WE ARE PENN STATE, YOU ARE PENN STATE!

Fact is, he never believed in the law. When his players got in trouble, he'd tell the cops to lay off the kids, that he'd take care of it. Then he'd make them empty the stadium trash cans or something.

See, old JoePa always thought that he was above the law.

Some of the comments are just ridiculous. Joe did nothing? Yeah, that's the problem. Joe did nothing when it was reported to him. That's just as bad as doing it himself. I don't care how good of a guy he might have been. How talented, how great. He kept a secret. A secret that would devastate the lives of many. Will I weep for you Joe? Hell no. God has a special place for people like you.

Joe Paterno's legacy will be his dedication to teamwork and schoolwork. I could care less about the scandal. Because tomorrow, no one will remember the scandal, they will remember the contributions of a man we can only aspire to achieve a fraction of which he did. Stay with us JP, just a little longer.

I hope the people making negative comments realize that they're doing it on a website that celebrates porn, arrests, Kardashians, etc. None of those people will EVER do as much good as Paterno has. His players continue to love and support him, and he did a tremendous amount of good for the university. He even gave $200K last month, AFTER being fired. How many of the people featured on this website will ever do that?

I wish people, for at least the last portion of his life, could stop linking him to Sandusky. He spent nearly 60 YEARS of his life at Penn State!!!! You can't say Penn State without thinking of Joe Paterno. He's donated millions of dollars, 100% of his work, and his life to Penn State. Why can't people see him as the 2nd winningest coach in NCAA football history (409)???? Why can't we remember him for those accomplishments????

The doctors should keep quiet and go about their usual business.

....sorta like Joey did with those youngsters.

Joey Boots

I think maybe he is pretending to be on his death bed until this whole Sandusky thing blows over - just like that Libyan plane bomber the Brits released who was supposedly on his death bed but is still alive - yeah we're on to you Joe Pa!

All the good he did will not be undone by this awful tragedy that involves many others than JoePa.

Bummer. I was hoping he would last, and suffer much longer.

Adam, Liz, and Steven. Thank you for the dislike votes. It's people like you that will continue the sexual abuse disease. If he turned a blind eye on one of your sons I'm sure you would see it differently. I stand by my comment. I don't care how great of a man he is or was, sexual abuse is unforgivable. And, Adam, I really feel sorry for you. May you never have a son in the position the Penn State boys were in. Keep your heads in the sand people, cause it's idiots like you that keep allowing bad things to happen to children.

The Penn State Trustees should be ashamed of themselves.....Joe Paterno built Penn State and was treated like rubbish without the courtesy of a personal interview regarding the Sandusky scandal. Joe had no reason to live once they took away the only thing that has kept him going for the last 46 yrs ,other than his loving family, was his love of PSU and his beloved team. I want everyone to know that Joe Paterno recently donated $1 million dollars of his own money to PSU as he has done many times before. The funds were donated after he was fired. This is a man of impeccable character and nobody will ever love Penn State more or do more for the institution, period.
