Baltimore Ravens' Kicker

Distracted Before Botched

Field Goal Attempt

1/23/2012 11:06 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

a sad Billy Cundiff
Billy Cundiff -- the Baltimore Ravens' kicker who botched the kick that could have kept the team's Super Bowl dream alive -- was distracted before his field goal attempt ... to the point that coaches were yelling at him.

Two players on the team have spoken with TMZ -- one of whom says he witnessed the confrontation and another who did not witness it but says it is being widely discussed among Ravens players.

Our sources say ... immediately before Cundiff attempted the game-tying FG, he was doing what he was supposed to do -- practicing kicking on the sidelines.  But as the Ravens marched down the field, Cundiff was unaware that his time to kick was looming.

It's S.O.P. for kickers to walk toward the field when the time approaches for them to kick -- ready to run into the game.

According to our sources, coaches repeatedly called for Cundiff -- at least 6 times -- to no avail -- he wasn't responding.  We're told the coaches became "furious" because Cundiff wasn't ready to go.

Our sources say players and coaches are saying Cundiff was distracted ... not paying attention and not ready to immediately execute a kick.

As for how the team reacted to the botched attempt, we're told players were gracious.  As one player put it, "We didn't give him a hard time because he looked like he was ready to kill himself."

Distracted? The fact that he missed the field goal is enough evidence to the point. What exactly is the implication here? He wasn't taking his job seriously? He was plagued by personal problems that were interfering with his focus? He doesn't get along with the coaches? What?

In my opinion, it was the coach's job if he was that distracted then he should have been pulled. It is common sense, with a big game if a player is that distracted YOU PULL HIM.

They might want to check his bank account and then check the cash reserves of the Patriots. They have cheated before, so it wouldn't be above them to buy off another player, they've probably done it before.

Ummmm...the ball isn't snapped unless the kicker is ready!

This the dumbest thing I've heard!! What is TMZ going to report tomorrow? That their sources confirm Cundiff cut his toe nails on his kicking foot the night before the game!

Poor Billy. Though a good kick didn't necessarily mean we would of won the game. The play before would have ensured it. Hope the Giants crush the Pats.

I'd say that the coaches are morons for spooking this guy right before the kick. So he missed his cue, bug deal. He was probably super-focused on preparing for the kick. So I hope the big mouths who dug into him realize they are the ones that threw him off his game.

Harbaugh had one more timeout left. He is the one that blew the game. The Ravens had to rush the play instead of calling the timeout and settling down.

I too think it may have been related to organized crime, maybe he knew he had to blow it or it was a nice pair of concrete shoes. Either way truth like this tends to surface, corruption in pro-sports is as American as bombing a defenseless country.

If Tom Brady does what Tom Brady does and not have the sub-par game he had over throwing wide open receivers and a few who dropped balls...the Pats blow out the Ravens...this is a non-story. They were lucky to even be in that position.

Lee Evans lost the game by not catching the ball that was right in his hands.

But I blame Harbaugh for not calling a timeout for allowing enough time for the kicker not to rush the kick.

The whole Balt sideline during the 4th quarter were too out of whack. Harbaugh was pushing coaches and it seemed like it was the Keystone Cops on the sidelines. Bad job by the Ravens. Should have won the game but they CHOKED
