Jay Leno Sued

Is This Some Kind of Sikh Joke?

1/24/2012 3:30 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

NO ONE mocks the Sikh religion and gets away with it ... not even Jay Leno -- at least that's the sentiment behind a new lawsuit, filed by one angry Sikh follower ... in Bakersfield, CA.

It's all over a recent segment on "The Tonight Show" (above) -- in which Jay pokes fun at the homes of several GOP candidates. We'll spare you, but the punchline is that Mitt Romney -- a famously wealthy businessman -- spends his summers in a solid gold palace.

As an illustration, Jay pulled up a photo of India's Harmandir Sahib -- aka the Golden Temple of Amritsar -- one of the most sacred buildings in the world to the Sikh people.

There's been a lot of outrage among Sikhs over the clip -- but one man in California named Dr. Randeep Dhillon took his religious fervor one step further ... filing a libel lawsuit against the late night host, claiming Leno is responsible for encouraging hatred and ridicule of his religion.

According to Randeep, the Romney joke "falsely portrays the holiest place in the Sikh religion as a vacation resort owned by a non-Sikh" ... THE HORROR.

Randeep is suing for general and punitive damages. A rep for NBC had no comment.

Gotta love Canada

The Americans will sue for anything! Hello they sued McDonalds for a burn caused by spilling hot coffee. Absolutely disgusting is how I describe this!!!
This would not happen in Canada!

I am really sick and tired of this PC bs. Nobody can crack a joke anymore. Especially if it's a white Catholic male. Because anything that comes out of their mouths MUST be racist and politically incorrect. ~ GET OVER IT, folks.

I would just like to say, I am a Sikh American, the majority of us did NOT find Jay Leno's joke offensive, and I agree Dr. Dhillon shouldn't be sueing over this but to just explain where he is coming from, it is very hard to deal with people staring at you and thinking you are a terrorist when you are from INDIA and not the middle east and you from the SIKH religion and not part of radical islam... two sikh men over the age of 80 were just gunned down in california because someone thought they were terrorists... this is why this strikes so close to home for us... and THIS IS OUR COUNTRY TOO!! Would you like the American Indians to tell all the Caucasion people to leave and go back to Europe?!?!!!

He's delusion if he thinks that lawsuit won't be thrown out of court.

Seriously people, Sikhism and Islam are NOT related in any way! I get it, it was a joke meant toward Romney, not Sikhism. To the person who posted that we should bomb this building, it was really not needed, these people have nothing to do with the Muslim terrorists and twin towers.

Here's an idea for Leno to get laughs. Hold up a picture of grungy Heesus Kryste aka JC smoking a weed and guzzling beer.

Jay Leno hasn't been funny in twenty-five years. He should be sued for impersonating a comedian ...

Jay Leno has done no wrong:

It's sad TMZ got duped by the election going on in another country.

North American Sikhs (We consider the US or Canada our home, not India) have a very different feeling than the uproar being used for political gains.

Please help us spread the voice of reason. We can talk about what we hear, or what we know. :)

kanwarjeet singh

I am a Sikh and the first I heard about this incident was from the Indian media. The same non-Sikh minister (equivalent to a U.S. senator in rank) who did nothing to prosecute the murders of tens of thousands of innocent Sikhs in India in the 1980s is strangely suddenly keen on using this issue and protesting an innocent and innocuous joke ... 99% of Sikhs in America and the world over will simply laugh at the joke and forget about it. This is not an issue at all with us. Unfortunately the persons who are filing the law-suit are acting foolishly and quite contrary to the wishes of the Sikh-American community.
