Don Cornelius

Ex-Wife Scores Huge

Life Insurance Payout

2/1/2012 1:27 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Viktoria Chapman Cornelius
Don Cornelius
died with 2 life insurance policies worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the ex-wife he hated will get all the money ... TMZ has learned.

Don's breakup with Viktoria Chapman Cornelius was brutal. He was convicted of domestic abuse and, according to him, she pepper sprayed him multiple times.

During the divorce in 2009, Don said in legal docs obtained by TMZ, 'I am 72 years old. I have significant health issues. I want to finalize this divorce before I die."

The divorce was indeed finalized later that year, but there's a provision in the settlement agreement that says Don must make Viktoria the beneficiary of both of his life insurance policies -- totaling around $300,000 in benefits.

Under California law, if a policyholder commits suicide within 2 years of the time the policy is issued, the company can deny payment. But Don had the policy for more than 2 years, so Viktoria -- the woman he despised -- will get the loot.

Insurance companies don't pay out even when there are no irregularities...they certainly won't in this case.

Just to clear up the misconception that life insurance won't pay beneficiaries if the insured committed suicide, most private insurance policies have a 2-year suicide exclusion period. After that, the policy must pay the benefit regardless of manner of death.

$300k is NOTHING in terms of women that want to live like they own Beverly Hills. She'll blow that on clothes and shoes in 6 months.

That doesn't seem fair at all! Why should he be forced to add this woman that he hated as the beneficiary??? He has an adult son, why could'nt they do that? Sounds like she made out like a bandit.

Remember Big Daddy DC for standing up for his own back in the day. There were maybe one or two shows they could call their own and SoOOOoOOul Train was one. It was hip, current and the front runner to ANY modern music/talent now. American Idol would NOT be on tv if it wasn't for DC and SoOOoooOOul Train. #Truth He is the original PIMP !!!
They put talent on their show and invited the public to dance along.
DC fought for his own back in the day. He didn't fold up like a lawn chair, he stood his ground and he put up a few shows back when it wasn't very popular to do so. This man had courage, guts and toughness to fight for his shows. We would NOT be as cultured today if it wasn't for the Original Pimp - Don Cornelius.
Our brains age and who knows what really goes through it after so many years of struggle? If anything, he was far from being a coward. RIP Mr Cornelius. We have lost a great man.

I work in the insurance field. Typically all insurance policies have a two year suicide clause. Its not a state law, its a clause about 99.9% of insurance policies have in it. Two years after the policy is in force, the suicide clause is no longer valid.

I, too, believe suicide negates any life insurance money. I would imagine, Viktoria was given an extremely substantial divorce settlement. In the scheme of things, $300,000.00 isn't that big of a deal for his ex-wife.

Once a life insurance policy matures (that being 2 years with most insurers) any cause of death is collectable.
