Newt Gingrich

Sued for

Assault and Battery

2/4/2012 7:00 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

0204-newt-gingrich-getty-bn-1A Florida man has filed a lawsuit against Newt Gingrich and his security team -- claiming he was roughed up outside the Florida Republican Presidential Primary earlier this week ... because he was carrying a sign supporting another candidate.

In a lawsuit filed yesterday in U.S. District court in Florida, Edward Dillard claims he was just minding his own business on January 31 when Newt and his wife came strolling up to the polling place. Dillard claims he was standing outside of a canopy which had been set up with a microphone stand, when Newt and Callista came right up to him and shook his hand.

Dillard claims Newt then noticed his Ron Paul t-shirt and "immediately turned his back" to him and went on to greet other people. That's when Dillard claims several of Gingrich's security team came up to him and tried to "intimidate him into moving from the spot."

Dillard -- who says he was wearing open-toed sandals -- then claims one of the agents "lifted his heeled shoe over Dillard's right foot and dug the back of it into his skin, twisting it side-to-side like he was stomping out a cigarette, causing a fracture to Dillard's right foot."

After a minor tussle, Dillard claims the guy who stomped his foot shouted to other members of his team, "Everyone step on his toes!"

Dillard is suing Newt, the campaign and the security firm for assault and battery and seeking unspecified damages.

No comment so far from Gingrich campaign.

This man was NOT attending a Gingrich function to cause trouble. It was outside a POLLING PLACE! The man politely shook Gingrich's hand and big bully Newt was immediately offended that he shook the hand of a man wearing a "Ron Paul 2012" shirt. (HELLO, there's an embarrassing photo that could go viral!) That's when the assault happened. He went to the hospital afterwards where it was determined that he suffered a fracture. A police report was filed, he is pressing charges. Jesse Benton, the campaign manager for Ron Paul, released the following statement: “They say the culture of an organization is a reflection of its top executive, and today’s deplorable behavior against Ron Paul supporter, Eddie Dillard, in Florida reflects very poorly on Congressman Gingrich. I call on Congressman Gingrich to publicly apologize to Mr. Dillard. In addition, we ask that those Gingrich campaign staff directly involved in the episode be immediately terminated.” Gingrich, naturally one who considers himself to be above reproach, has pretended the whole thing never happened. But give him time and I'm sure he'll come up with a good zinger to victimize the victim even further. Ugh... Newt is appalling!

In America you can sue anyone for just about anything; without proof, but you can't win. Just a ploy.

So many corrupt politicians in this world. I don't know how anyone still wonders why Ron Paul has passionate followers. When one finds an uncorrupt politician, people get excited. Newt is garbage and if you don't know it yet, you're blind.

Does anyone see the irony here? I Paultard complaining he was attacked and retaliating?

What would Paul say? (if he were actually intellectually honest)

He attacked due to our interventionist campaign policy?

If he hadn't been in 'their location' they would have no reason to attack him.

Paultards have been photobombing their campaigns for years, what do they expect?

How would they feel if Newt supporters were in their events?

Newt Gingrich has the right to peruse the acquisition of foot stompers. It is none of Paul's business.

Ron Paul supporters have been running an 'apartheid campaign', of course the supporters of other candidates will rise up.

Newt Gingrich does not threaten Paul's campaign security, the Paultard had no right to launch a preemptive strike on that campaign.

Funny every one has passed the case to closed, he did it.........I wonder if you would like to be treated as guilty before the evidence is showed?

Of course Newt has others fight for him. Just like in Vietnam he took multiple deferments instead of going off to fight his generation's useless war in Vietnam. Now, he wants to send more young men to die in the useless Middle East wars. Newt is a coward, hypocrite and a narcissist. How anyone can support him is puzzling.

Republicans are known to stomp on anyone's rights if that person doesn't agree with them. Anyone who is not rich and can be protected by Republicans are idiots to vote for them.

Why should you need security to run for president. People think they are way to important
I don't vote for important people, I vote for productive people.

The new face of politics. Show up at a forum for a candidate you don't support campaigning for another. I'm guessing he wasn't standing quietly in the corner minding his own business. We continue our downward spiral.

The plaintiff is stupid on two counts: 1. Wearing open-toe sandals in a crowd pressing to meet a presidential candidate [It's foreseeable that one's toes might get stepped on]; 2. being a Ron Paul supporter.

This guy has about as much credibility as David Axlerod's neighbor who got up on national TV with Gloria Allwretch to claim she was sexually harassed by Herman Cain.

I was there, and am pretty sure there were an over abundance of camera crews crowding and shoving everyone to get a photo or to shake Newt's hand. It was chaos. So if his toes were stepped on, I should sue too because so were mine.
