Whitney Houston

Taking Xanax

2/12/2012 7:04 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

The body of Whitney Houston being removed from the Beverly Hills Hilton in an ambulance.
Whitney Houston was taking Xanax ... evidence she may have fallen asleep in the bathtub where she died ... TMZ has learned.

Family members of Whitney tell us the singer had a prescription for the drug, which is commonly used to treat anxiety and depression.

We told you yesterday ... the night before Whitney died, she had been drinking a lot. Xanax mixed with alcohol can cause severe sedation, which could cause someone to fall asleep in a bathtub.

As TMZ first reported, Whitney was found in the bathtub and removed before EMTs arrived.  The L.A. County Coroner will perform an autopsy -- possibly today -- to determine if Whitney died from drowning, and OD or other causes.

As we previously reported, Beverly Hills cops obtained a search warrant and found various prescription bottles -- but, as far as we know, no illicit drugs.

Prescription drugs like Xanax are lethal poison band aids that treat symptoms of disease and not the root cause. And the benefits never outweigh the risks. Only proper nutrition, vitamins and minerals and exercise can insure good health.

Rest In Peace Whitey Houston. Such a sad deal for her, her friends and family. But what it is also sad is Clive Davis whom has taken the limelight for mentoring Whitney Houston.... IN reality it is a man named Danny Gittelman, who used to own Pickwick Records.. When Danny Gittelman had retired from that company, Dion Warwick had called him wanting to set up an interview with her niece (Whitney Houston) and it was there Whitney Houston's career actually began in Fall River, MA under the mentorship of Danny Gittelman.

like the authorities would say if she had illegal drugs in her room, they won't say anything other then she had prescriptions for all of the drugs, sure she did, they always say that when its a celebrity but if its a regular person they have no problem saying what drugs were found.celebrities are regular people too just cuz they sing or whatever DOES"NT make them better then anyone else.Stop covering up for her and tell the truth. Its ok for people to buy her music and pay BIG bucks for her concerts but NOT to know what she REALLY died from. This goes on and on and on and on.

*I can't believe these self righteous individuals who think they are the all mighty no it alls. Prescription drugs like Xanax are safe when used in the correct way, in the correct doses. Also why must we always bring up the military when a celebrity dies. We mourn our fallen heroes in the military all the time. They are not forgotten heroes.

Xanax - and benzodiazipines in general - can be useful, but shouldn't be taken for more than two weeks. I'm a psych RN and the physical misery/suffering of benzo withdrawal is pure torture and dangerous as well. The best book I know related to addictions is "Sex, Drugs, Gambling & Chocolate" by A. T. Horvath. The good news is: addictions can be overcome.

Her doctor is not to blame. I hate these comments blaming her doctor. SHE is the one who took the pills and fell asleep in the bathroom--a horrible horrible accident. She apparently had an issue with anxiety, I would too if i woke up one morning and couldn't sing after I had been a mega superstar with one of the best voices ever.

I take .25 mg of xanax once a day.... there's no way in hell it would ever make me tired enough to fall asleep in a tub and drown to death.... unless she was already so extremely exhausted to begin with, i cant see it making her do that.
