Gerard Butler

In Rehab [Update]

2/24/2012 1:20 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

12:04 PM PST --
Gerard's manager, Alan Siegel tells TMZ, "Gerard left Betty Ford early this morning and he's healthy."

Gerard Butler
is being treated for substance abuse at the Betty Ford Center ... TMZ has learned.

Butler's problems were triggered by the physical demands of shooting "300" in 2006 (see video below of Gerard preparing for the role). We're told the actor began struggling with pain management, and the problem became exacerbated while filming "Of Men and Mavericks," when Butler was badly hurt on December 18 during a surfing accident.

We're told Butler realized he was relying too much on prescription drugs and decided to head off a full-blown addiction by entering Betty Ford three weeks ago.

Sources tell TMZ ... Butler also developed issues with cocaine, but the root problem appears to be the injuries and pain management.

We're told Butler will be leaving Betty Ford later today.

I really like this Guy and Kudos for him for recognizing he was suffering and doing something about it. This is the time to build up and not tear down. Godspeed Gerald

I sympathize -- I struggle with pain management every time I see one of his movies.

Good for him. At least he saw he had a problem

Unlike most addicted celebs, this guy had the brains to realize he had a problem and the balls to do something about it before it got worse. Three weeks? Yep, that's the detox process and now the real work begins. The difference between Butler and other celebs is that this guy has a reasonably level head on his shoulders. Anyone who understands how opioids bind to receptors in the brain will understand how one can become PHYSICALLY dependent on painkillers. Butler has made no secret about the fact that he knows he has an addictive personality. High 5s and maximum kudos that he is taking the problem in hand.

Gerry, all the best, darlin'. You're in my prayers.

Sorry to hear about his addiction problems. He seemed on camera like he had it all together. Amazing how the real life person can be so different from his on camera image. Still like him in Phantom, Bounty Hunter, and his role opposite Heigl (forgot the movie).

Still he was only in there for 3 weeks so maybe not so bad or just the beginning of rehab processes.

Good for him. He's being proactive and heading off a potential problem before it gets out of hand. I just hope the studio he was working for, when he was injured on the set is paying through the nose for him to get help. We don't need any more train wrecks like Lindsey, Michael, Whitney, Anna Nicole etc. He's one smart Scot!

Why can't you do anything about your spammers? Every other board does.

He is a man-ho who has screwed so many women he can't remember them! He needs drug rehab and help with his sex addiction. I used to like him.

I don't think anyone in Hollywood isn't addicted to some **** or other. It's disgusting.

All celebrities are in rehab. They make too much money and love throwing it away.
