Davy Jones’ Death

Revs Up Monkeemobile Mystery

2/29/2012 5:30 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

what the hell happened to the infamous Monkeemobile
The sudden death of Davy Jones today has re-opened the greatest mystery in television history -- what the hell happened to the infamous Monkeemobile??? And TMZ has the answer ...

For those of you under 55 ... the Monkeemobile is the modified Pontiac GTO made famous on the 1960s Monkees TV show -- and the second Davy died ... it became THE hot topic in the Monkees fan world.

Famed car customizer George Barris -- who built the car for the show -- tells TMZ, he's been getting calls non-stop ever since Davy passed away ... bombarded with questions like, “Where is the car? Is it still available? Can we see it? Can we take a photo with it?”
But there's one problem ... George doesn't have the car anymore -- he sold it at auction back in 2008 for roughly $500,000 ... to a Michigan man by the name of Mel Gutherie.

And Mel tells us, he's always open to fans taking pictures with the car -- but they better be willing to travel to the Midwest ... because he doesn't feel comfortable driving it very far. In fact, he had to have it TRUCKED to a Davy Jones concert in 2010, where Davy signed the hood (above).

Fun fact -- in approximately 40 years, the car has only racked up 8,000 miles.

Molly, the photo of Davy signing the car is from that event. it was nice meeting him there, and very nice of him to come out to sign the car despite the single digit temps.

Legendary car builder and painter Dean Jefferies built the Monkeemobile. Barris takes credit for it, but it is undue. It is widely do***ented that he did not build it. His brand of PR worked really well before the internet. Also the car was on display at the Peterson Museum, here in Los Angeles for years, so you're headline is a little silly.

I hope that they use the Monkeemobile as the hearse at Davy Jones funeral. I'd hope the current owner was open to that idea.

It never sold at auction!

The car was not built by George Barris but by Dean Jeffries.
There were 2 cars built. George Barris did own car #2 but sold it in 2008 $360...,000, its in Michigan Now. Car #1 is owned by a private collector in New York state. There are also 2 replica cars that were built.

who cares

TMZ you would have to ask people under 40 before you would find anyone who doesn't remember the monkeys or even the GTO. After all one of their hits was a song about the car. They were also still on TV in the 70's. I am 48 I can remember the monkees and their TV show which was really the first scripted reality show when you look at all the scripted reality shows of today. Can Remember Born Free and The Jackson 5 so you are off by 10 years when saying 55 you stupid freaking kids.
