Davy Jones’ Death

Revs Up Monkeemobile Mystery

2/29/2012 5:30 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

what the hell happened to the infamous Monkeemobile
The sudden death of Davy Jones today has re-opened the greatest mystery in television history -- what the hell happened to the infamous Monkeemobile??? And TMZ has the answer ...

For those of you under 55 ... the Monkeemobile is the modified Pontiac GTO made famous on the 1960s Monkees TV show -- and the second Davy died ... it became THE hot topic in the Monkees fan world.

Famed car customizer George Barris -- who built the car for the show -- tells TMZ, he's been getting calls non-stop ever since Davy passed away ... bombarded with questions like, “Where is the car? Is it still available? Can we see it? Can we take a photo with it?”

But there's one problem ... George doesn't have the car anymore -- he sold it at auction back in 2008 for roughly $500,000 ... to a Michigan man by the name of Mel Gutherie.

And Mel tells us, he's always open to fans taking pictures with the car -- but they better be willing to travel to the Midwest ... because he doesn't feel comfortable driving it very far. In fact, he had to have it TRUCKED to a Davy Jones concert in 2010, where Davy signed the hood (above).

Fun fact -- in approximately 40 years, the car has only racked up 8,000 miles.

Although George built most of the legendary T.V. and movie cars of the '50's & '60...'s, he didn't build the Monkeemobile, Dean Jeffries did. Dean also built the Black Beauty from the Green Hornet T.V. series. Let's give credit where credit is due. R.I.P. Davy.

TMZ got it wrong. Barris did built a duplicate Monkeemobile, but not the original. As Jeff wrote, Dean Jeffries designed and built the original. Consulting George on this is like asking Monica Lewinski about foreign policy. D'oh!

The first Monkee Mobile that was used on the show...Monkee Mobile number 1, that was lost in Austraia and mysteriously found in PR where it was sold in Auction for 5000.00 b/c only one person knew what it was. That car is privately owned and is in NJ.

Wow lots wrong with this article. Monkeemobile was never originally built by Barris, but Dean Jeffries. Barris bought car number 2 of 2 and restored it selling it at Barrett Jackson auction in 2008 for $360...K.

There were several Monkeemobiles. The one that was sent to Australia during a Monkees tour never made it back out of Australia (those Australians). Somehow the car made it to Puerto Rico where is was discovered in 1992. It was being used as a hotel courtesy car.

Last year the George Barris company had a tour going, and that car tour came to MGM Grand at Foxwoods casino in Connecticut. I saw the cars there. The Monkeemobile was there, as well as the Casket Car that Grandpa Munster drove.
There were alot of wonderful custom and vintage cars there. I believe that this was in June 2011. Even Butch Patrick was there to sign autographs. You could also purchase George Barris signed autographed photos. It was a very neat event. We took some phone pictures of the Monkeemobile, not sure how they came out. But the Monkeemobile is alive and well, touring somewhere.

Dean Jeffries built both original Monkeemobiles. Here is an article I wrote in 1997 about their history. I own the copyright to this article. http://new.monkees.net/monkeemobile-history-from-pontiac-enthusiast-magazine/. Sad to hear about Mr. Jones' passing, he was a kind and gracious man.

To the person who said the owner of the Monkeemobile is rude, I would like to say nothing could be further from the truth. I have met Mel several times and he is friendly and gracious. I find it hard to believe he would walk away from anybody interested in the car he loves. I have witnessed him speaking to loads of fans concerning the Monkeesmobile and the band itself. IF that happened, I think it was an isolated incident.

The Monkeemobile has appeared at the Woodward Dream Cruise the past 4 years and has also made apprearances at several other venues in Michigan including the downriver cruise and the Telegraph cruise.

George Barris didn't design or build the Monkeemobile. Dean Jeffries did. It's in the ending credits of every show.

Barris didn't build the Monkeemobile... he made replicas and owned one of the two Monkeemobiles... but he did not build the original... Dean Jeffries did...
