'Luck' Director

Blames TMZ for Killing Show

3/15/2012 8:45 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

031512_luck_still2031512_luck_still2
Director Michael Mann straight up LIED to the cast and crew of "Luck" yesterday ... insisting the reason the show got cancelled is because TMZ "unfairly spun" the story about a THIRD horse dying on set.

Sorry Michael ... no spin here.

Mann and producer David Milch addressed the staff right after HBO pulled the plug on the show yesterday ... and explained, "If you take a look at the media coverage that has been spun unfairly. If you saw the media coverage ... It's TMZ and everybody else."

Let's take a look at the facts ...

-- THREE horses died on their watch. No spin.
-- Horse #3 was euthanized on the set ... and production continued a few hours later
-- Publicist Karen Jones initially LIED to TMZ about the story ... in an effort to stall us from publishing.

Bottom line -- if the horses were alive, the show MIGHT still be on the air.

This is a sad commentary on horse racing itself. If three died just filming this show, how many die on a regular basis? They are bred with spindly legs for speed. But these skinny legs are not strong enough to handle the stresses of racing. Something needs to change.

Obsess much? Mann said "site's like TMZ" that didn't sound like he is solely blaming TMZ. I enjoy reading all the indusctry BS like everyone else on here, but c'mon. TMZ is the National Enquirer of this generation. This is a celebrity rag not the Washington Post. Your not curing Cancer or Aids, your talking about Russel Brand throwing a cell phone... Real hard hitting stuff. How many Conrad Murray stories did this site run in one day? At the end of the day that TV show supported families. Sure it's sad that a few horses died during filming, but it happens. HBO took the precautions to ensure safety... John Landis took all the precautions in the world and look what happened, yet the show went on... You would think PETA would approve since they kill so many dogs and cats on purpose each year...

Any show that allows animals to be abused should not only be OFF THE AIR....but perhaps sued by the Humane Society....BTW where were they during the shoots. Aren't they supposed to be on set when ANY animals are used????!!!!! Horses are highly evolved creatures and should NEVER be abused. Shame on all of the race tracks who allow the horses to be drugged. What a sick business!!!

THANK YOU TMZ!!! NO innocent animal should ever suffer or die for shallow entertainment....especially a lame show like Luck. Please, Please help uncover the horse cruelty on the streets of NYC with the horse drawn carriages...Almost a horse a day collapses in the street due to starvation and exhaustion! Thank you again for telling the truth!!

End Horse Slaughter

Along with NOT supporting your local racetrack, Please consider making a donation to your local horse sanctuary. Many of these horses are former race horses who didn't win at the racetrack. Some are even race horse champions ready to be slaughtered (such as the Kentucky Derby winner Ferninand who was sent to slaughter). Many are only a year old and are pregnant and are going to be sent to sent a grissly painful death. There is also alexbrownracing.com where there are horses in need all over the country and anti-slaughter. Overbreeding is the problem and the racetrack industry is to blame.

End Horse Slaughter

Also, watch HBO's sports segment on a young race horse named NO DAY OFF. You can find it on youtube and it exposes the ugly truth of the race horse industry. Type in HBO -RACEHORSE SLAUGHTER PT. 1

Extra extra read all about it. TMZ claims TMZ is telling the truth and everyone believes them. Fools everywhere cheer them on. TMZ is obviously obfuscating other facts.

Boondoggle

First off, it's sad when any living creature dies. But the truth is that TMZ (and others) DID spin the story. Saying three horses died ON SET is untruthful, as has been confirmed by several other news outlets. Secondly, horses die. Believe it or not, the producers of Luck, even with those three horse deaths, have a better track record than real-life professional stables. And they had far more oversight from animal rights advocates, by their own choice.

So yes, TMZ, you DID spin the story. Yes it is true that three horses died. But all the rest--the cir***stances, etc., you spun that hard. And all these non-thinkers are on here "oh, the poor horses," or "you go, TMZ." Not one of them has any clue of the rate of horse death just from standing in a stable.

The third accident could've happened anywhere. If TMZ knew anything about horse racing they would know there have been many horses that have died the same way. There is not a race track in country where a horse has had an accident like that and has to be put down and the people handling those horses do it every day and are properly trained. TMZ went over the top on the third death without any knowledge except for the fact a horse died and the picture of the horse on a bed was completely CLASSLESS

Eff off, Michael Mann! Your selfishness and lies will get you nowhere but off the set.

Dan

so lets see is it spin or a news story:
1: did TMZ report how the other 2 horses die? No
2: did TMZ check into (and report) history of dead horses or how often horses die at tracks especially that track?
3: did TMZ contact and report what the animal rights rep on site had to say? no
Given the above questions and their answers at best your "reporting" is really spin.

Seriously? A really good show is cancelled because 3 horses have died. No offence to you horse-lovers, but we are talking about horses, not people. If three actors had died, I could understand. But horses? Guess what everytime a steak is ordered, or you drive up to a McDonald's window, a cow effectively dies for your culinary enjoyment. Pathetic the way, people and their overzealous causes negatively impact the general population

Shouldn't there be an investigation about who was in charge of these horses? If all 3 belong to a horse trainer for the movies, maybe they are responsible... It sounds like a few died while rearing back, so it seems they were anxious on set? I can't believe 3 horses died :(
