George Clooney & Dad

ARRESTED During Protest

3/16/2012 10:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

11:30 AM PST
-- Clooney just bailed out ... for $100.

8:45 AM PST -- Clooney and his dad were arrested for crossing a police line ... which is a misdemeanor offense.
Father and son were arrested by the uniformed division of the U.S. Secret Service ... but he's currently being booked into a D.C. police station.

George Clooney
and his father Nick have been arrested in Washington, D.C. during a protest over the Sudan crisis.

Clooney was leading a protest in front of the Sudanese embassy in D.C. when he was hauled away by secret service agents.

0316_george_clooney_subassetClooney's publicist Stan Rosenfield tells TMZ, "They were protesting the violence committed by the government of Sudan on its own innocent men, women and children. They were demanding they allow humanitarian aid into the country before it becomes the largest humanitarian crisis in the world."

Sources connected with George tell us he feels good about the arrest because it puts the spotlight on the crisis. Moments before the arrest, George was mobbed by reporters (below) -- claiming, he was protesting to raise awareness about the "Sudanese government committing atrocities on their own people."

We're told a dozen people got arrested including congressmen, leaders of the human rights community, Sudanese citizens, Martin Luther King III and George's father ... Nick Clooney.

Clooney recently shot a short documentary about the situation in Sudan, which he released on WARNING -- Video contains VERY graphic content.

I hate that the celebrities who get arrested for protesting love it, because it gets their name in the papers and supposedly "supports their cause". It's basically rewarding criminal behavior. It's also quite arrogant for him to believe that his being arrested will do great things.
But, at least Clooney isn't one of those nuts who commits acts of terrorism for their cause, like Lucy Lawless.
BTW - Humanitarian aid to corrupt countries like this is a waste, as over 95% of it goes to the warlords who want to keep the country in ruins. By doing this, it ends up hurting the people he's trying to help by lining the pockets of the warlords who are committing atrocities against them.

He did this so that it would shed light on the situation in Sudan. We Americans are so selfish. When we get so much from Africa, oil, gold, diamonds, chips for your cell phone and so many many things. they are starving and dont even have drinking water. One day we just may need them. Hell we are already using them.

some of you people need to shut the hell up and stop acting so selfish. the universe does not revolve around the U.S. and its problems. compared to other places around the world we are lucky. people over hear are complaining about stuff like gas prices while people over there are DYING. it's good that there's SOMEONE out there who's protesting against all the violence and problems! who cares if it's a celebrity. he's doing a lot more than you guys. It's sad people feel the need to diss others for trying to make a difference, especially when those people do NOTHING at all. Pathetic.
