George Clooney
and his father Nick have been arrested in Washington, D.C. during a protest over the Sudan crisis.

Clooney was leading a protest in front of the Sudanese embassy in D.C. when he was hauled away by secret service agents.

0316_george_clooney_subassetClooney's publicist Stan Rosenfield tells TMZ, "They were protesting the violence committed by the government of Sudan on its own innocent men, women and children. They were demanding they allow humanitarian aid into the country before it becomes the largest humanitarian crisis in the world."

Sources connected with George tell us he feels good about the arrest because it puts the spotlight on the crisis. Moments before the arrest, George was mobbed by reporters (below) -- claiming, he was protesting to raise awareness about the "Sudanese government committing atrocities on their own people."

We're told a dozen people got arrested including congressmen, leaders of the human rights community, Sudanese citizens, Martin Luther King III and George's father ... Nick Clooney.

Clooney recently shot a short documentary about the situation in Sudan, which he released on EnoughProject.org. WARNING -- Video contains VERY graphic content.

Sudan's not that bad. At least it's not raining like it is here in Vancouver. Jeez, some days it's like living in a sponge

I am sorry, but I am tired of these people, celebrity or not always clamoring about this country or that country and ignoring their own back yard. Lets take care of here first, then we will be better equiped to help others. However, you never hear of other nations jumping the bandwagon and saying Hey lets help the US out, lets send aid their way for all the tornado/hurricane/poverty victims! Oh that's right, we are one of the richest countries in the world, and yet we can't and won't care for our own.

George Clooney will be speaking on this topic in Houston on May 3rd, as part of the Brilliant Lecture Series. Tickets are available at www.brilliantlectures.org. Mr. Clooney's unique celebrity status helps focus the world's attention on issues he is most passionate about like the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

I respect Mr. Clooney's passion for this issue, however, I've personally reached a point where you help your own before you help others. This country is hurting on so many levels and we have so many problems and while I know Africa has worse problems than America, the U.N. exists for a reason. Let them deal with it. We cannot solve the world's problems. We cannot even solve our own.

If it is so important, why doesn't he charter a plane and smuggle in supplies himself?

Why doesn't he put his money where his mouth is? Sell the italian villa and give the money to the poor starving Sudanese? Ooops, I forgot, this is just for a photo op and doesn't really mean anything.

I so agree wtih Miss Mary. It is just horific what is going on in Sudan and for people to speak out and say they shouldn't be helping these innocent human being is truly sad. I work for an eye institution that travels to Sudan to perform surgeries on these people and it is truly amazing what the Sudanese people have to do to get to their destination for surgery, it is truly sad and heart breaking. They travel for days and up to 80-100 miles to get to the location just for their surgery, that sadly they so desperately need. Any human who has compassion for those less forunate than ourselves I give them a thumbs up and support George Clooney for doing what he does to put this out there. We live in a wonderful country and yes we have problems but these people are 100 times worse off than we are. Thank you Miss Mary for your comments!

Good ol H.R. 347 must have officially gone into effect when Obama signed it into law last week. Don't folks realize, it's now a FELONY to hold a protest in most areas?

what a bunch of ignorant idiots on here...saying George is just seeking attention..ah, YEAH...that's what protesting is all about, that's what activism is all about, attention - bring awareness to a problem.

George has NOTHING to gain from this; he doesn't need fame, he's not getting a money - monetary gain from this. It comes from his heart. Compared to the right wing nutjobs who are out there trying to protest and discuss frickin birth control for women and the right to bear arms. what's the purpose you nutjob right wingers of the 'right to bear arms'..it's to kill something or someone, i.e, hunting, going out and killing beautiful, innocent, defenseless animals (ie the Trump Boys). Who on this earth needs a frickin GUN to carry and to protect themselves with. I don't know ONE person, ever, in my life who's had to have a gun as self protection, if that's the case...you tea party nut balls need to go get yourself some education and get yourself out of the drug gangs, ghettos, etc...otherwise you just want to shoot and kill something.

George is doing this with passion. Sure, we as America need help too, we're all suffering on some level. But someone also NEEDS to speak for these people. To compare americans and our suffering to these folks is ridiculous! Even the poorest of poor here has support, has rights! God bless George and/or any other entertainer or anyone who gets out there to fight for peace. Never once have I seen one republican ever do anything towards PEACE!
