'Idol' Contestant Phillip Phillips

Hometown Scrimps to Send

Family to Hollywood

3/18/2012 4:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

"American Idol" finalist Phillip Phillips’ family can't afford to watch him perform live in Hollywood -- so his hometown in Georgia is banding together ... to raise money to send 'em there ... TMZ has learned.

According to sources, it costs about $3,000 to fly out Phillip's family from Leesburg, GA to Los Angeles -- and the Phillipses simply can't afford to make the trip ... despite their son making it to the finals.

But the good citizens of Leesburg, GA have trying their best to help out ... throwing fundraisers every Wednesday -- where at least 15 merchants donate a percentage of their profits from that day ... to help the family make the trip to tinseltown.
The events are so popular -- Mayor Jim Quinn named 'em ‘Phillip Phillips’ Wednesdays’ ... and even gave Phillips’ family a key to the town.

Sources tell TMZ -- people from all over are eager to donate ... townsfolk ... tourists off the street ... and even fans as far as Florida are mailing in checks.

Of course, anything sounds awesome when you have kidney stones.

WTF is up with TMZ's photo choices? This guy has one of the most adorable mugs of any contestant on AI right now and they choose this photo? (Meanwhile, TMZ goes out of its way to make sure druggie Blohan and fat ass Kartrashian are always shown from their most flattering angles.)

With all the money they make on AI they can't help, for goodness sake don't they pay fat ass jenny 20 million and 10 million to Steven Tyler. Greedy hollywood at it's finest.

If your last name is Phillips, DO NOT name your male child Phillip - how lame! Use the money to buy the parents an education!

Like my grand daddy use to say, if you cant afford the trip, stay home. Because once you get there, you have to eat, pay for hotel, car rentals etc.

You're so right that given the money this show makes and pays it's stars, that when they get down to the top 10 they should at least pay for 2 family members (mom and dad possibly) to be in attendance- flight and accomodations

have so much respect for this guy. I have been through both kidney and gallstones. both can be unbelievably painful. When I had mine I was pretty much could only sit or lay in one position to keep it from hurting. How he performed is beyond me.

Why the hell doesn't American Idol pony up. I think they make enough, especially since the talent is the backbone of the show.

Hey Atlanta,GA home of DELTA AIRLINES. Step up and help a brother out! It is a mere drop-in-the bucket of what you rip the flying public off of!! Think of the free advertising you could get.

You would think that that useless c*nt JLO could reduce her check by like 0.00001% and fly them out. I guess it takes a lot of money to leave you kids with nannies and fly your other child...oh oops...I mean boyfriend...around the world. That and she has to pay a lot for someone to cement her face on every day

Since his community is doing all-out splurging to suppport his eventual success as a singer, let's hope his community (and America) finds out down the road that Phil Phillips is a really nice guy and not a douchbag.

If they would drive it would be a lot cheaper. Yeah, it may take 3 days each way, but you could probably do it for $1000 or so, not $3000.

I would think AI flies a couple people a week for each contestant. Is this for extra people??
