Jason Russell

Naked Meltdown Blamed on

'Brief Reactive Psychosis'

3/21/2012 7:50 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Jason Russell
's family has a statement on the "Kony 2012" founder's health ... claiming Russell was diagnosed with "brief reactive psychosis" following his naked meltdown ... and will remain hospitalized for several weeks.

The statement reads, "We would, again, like to make it clear that Jason's incident was in no way the result of drugs or alcohol in his body. The preliminary diagnosis he received is called brief reactive psychosis, an acute state brought on by extreme exhaustion, stress and dehydration."

The statement continues, "Though new to us, the doctors say this is a common experience given the great mental, emotional and physical shock his body has gone through in these last two weeks. Even for us, it's hard to understand the sudden transition from relative anonymity to worldwide attention - both raves and ridicules, in a matter of days."

TMZ posted the video last week ... showing a naked Russell ranting maniacally and slapping the pavement before cops detained him on a 5150 psychiatric hold last week.

Jason's family insists ... Russell "will get better" ... saying, "He is, and will remain, under hospital care for a number of weeks; and after that, the recovery process could take months before he is fully able to step back into his role with Invisible Children."

"During that time, we will focus not on a speedy recovery, but a thorough one."

Shame on you TMZ for posting the video of his breakdown and for keeping it posted for that matter. This man is suffering from a medical condition and should not be posted for further public viewing..this will only add to his personal suffering and does no good for his recovery. He is a good man who has done more than the "average Joe" to help others. He deserves respect..not one of us would want to be posted on social media while suffering from a medical condition. A line has to be drawn.

Coming from a long line of crazy people myself, I don't believe it. When the truth is finally told everything will make sense. Unfortunately, I have seen people flip out on drugs and act out in very bizarre ways, like Jason did. But mostly dressed. The public (many who have put their trust in him and their money) deserve to know the truth about who they're dealing with. He made the decision to put himself in the spotlight. Therefore, he and his family need to set the record straight. Although, he is just a freeway drive from where I live, I am thankful that he doesn't live in my neighborhood.

Completely humiliating.

Feel for the dude and for the dude's family.

I thank God he survived and is recovering now.

I was once ridiculed for a break-down.

That I didn't know I was having.

Grad school, necessitating 2-3 night jobs - producing -

Not knowing the-end-result.

You snap out of them - but to this day it's dis-belief.

"Push harder, push harder, push harder," has a consequence.

Shoulda seen it coming - which is what Jason'll say some
day - praise God he's okay.

Doctors that do this - that handle this - are phenomenal.

The Kony scam was starting to crater so the powers that be saw to it that this guy would crash and burn. He was either drugged or he's under mind control and tripped out. Start messing with the globalist's and you better watch out?

Give me a freakin' break. Yes, this is a real condition, but it's not like this guy was in the desert looking to get out of the heat, starving, dying of thirst and on no sleep. He went bat-sh!t-crazy in his own neighborhood around noon. What's this guy doing....sitting at home in a dark room with a heat lamp, reading post after post about him and his viral movie while smoking cigs for 72 hours straight, with no food, no water. Where was his wife? There should of been signs that he was about to have a break down, but still not one coworker or family member raised concern. This so call condition usually happens to people who are in war, or a way more stressed out situation, like death of a spouse, losing everything in a day...that kind of thing. All this dude has was a viral video and people talking about it. Talk about can't handle life. There is so much more to this story. He is obviously hiding from his family and coworkers what is really going on.

"Brief" Reactive Psychosis? That's the public relations talking. Sounds more like a manic episode. He is probably bipolar, thus the long hospital stay. You don't march through the neighborhood ranting naked due to a brief psychosis. Hunger, exhaustion? They are trying to explain it all in layman's terms.

I just looked up in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV for Psychiatric Disorders through the American Psychiatric Association and there is NO SUCH THING AS a Brief Reactive Psychosis. So the family is lying or the doctor is a quack or both. The only thing remotely close to it is called Acute Stress Disorder in which the person sees a very traumatic event or experienced it and it involved a threat of serious injury or death and responded with intense fear or helplessness.
Nowhere in the description of symptoms is stripping naked, cursing, and all the things that Russell was doing. It says it can lead to PTSD but it is considered a ANXIETY DISORDER. The book also said that the trauma had to have happened within a minimum of 2 days to 4 weeks for a diagnosis to be made. I looked up every single disorder that even related to "brief reactive psychosis" and there was NOTHING THERE. And this is the bible for psychiatrists to use to diagnose people.
Because of my research, I am leaning toward the fact that he got found out on his scam and panicked. No voodoo or witchcraft was involved.
