Over Brown-Face

Ashton Kutcher's new commercial for Popchips has officially been PULLED amidst allegations of racism ... after the actor donned brownface makeup to play a goofy Bollywood producer.

The ad -- which debuted on the Popchips website -- featured Ashton playing a variety of characters in a spoof "dating" commercial ... including a biker, a hippie, and an Indian guy named Raj.

The ad pissed off a whole bunch of people -- including blogger Anil Dash ... who called the ad, "a hackneyed, unfunny advertisement featuring Kutcher in brownface talking about his romantic options, with the entire punchline being that he's doing it in a fake-Indian outfit and voice."

Dash explained on his blog, "I think the people behind this Popchips ad are not racist. I think they just made a racist ad."

In the wake of the backlash, Popchips took down the ad ... and Popchips CEO Keith Belling issued a statement saying, "We did not intend to offend anyone. I take full responsibility and apologize to anyone we offended."

People need to lighten up already. There is NOTHING insulting about brown face. Black face was insulting because it was a totally inaccurate shade for a human being and was accompanied by offensive and negative stereotypes of AA's speech and intellect. That would definitely be hurtful.

But, without even reading all of the details, I am quite sure that AK wouldn't be involved in something blatantly discriminatory or offensive toward any group.

As for why other groups can get away with mocking whites, I don't agree with being mean-spirited toward anyone or any group. But since whites are still the predominate group in the USA and the world, I don't think that "stereotypes" of them are quite as hurtful to them.

It's kind of like David joking about Goliath the giant jerk versus Goliath joking about David the little pipsqueak. Who do you empathize with?

But it's not nice to mock any race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation in a mean-spirited way...TMO.

O please, get a life. This is a joking guy for a product and not some neo-Nazi spewing race hatred. I don't care if it's Eastern Indians or American Indians, actors play other races all the time. So Anglo-Europeans can only play other AE's and so forth. No logic. Duh.

Who cares what some idiotic, overly-sensitive, unknown blogger thinks!!! Get some balls! I'm tired of the over-board PC bullsh*t! Nothing is wrong with the ad. Well, at least, the company got the publicity they were looking for.

It's become a game to minorities now. Which minority group can claim to be the biggest victim of racism? They stumble all over each other trying to be the first ones to shout "racism".

No sense of humor. Might as well, cut Apu out of the Simpsons.

I really don't understand how people can even think this is a racist commercial. But are able to laugh their heads off when Dave Chappelle and Eddie Murphy dressed up as a white guy's for skits or The Wayans’s brothers doing a whole movie "White Chicks." What about Sacha Baron Cohen the English Comedian who Plays Ali G, Borat, and Bruno. All of these cases have pushed the envelope and crossed the lines numerous times, but you do not here such wide spread complaints.

It’s this kind of double standards and ignorance that creates racism. Is it racist when a straight person plays a gay person or vice versa? If you are going to hate this, at least reply back with an answer.

There's countless examples of very classy actors doing black face. We got the great C. Thomas Howell in Soul Man. We got the Wayans Brothers in White Chicks. That was a very tasteful example of reverse blackface.

I don't see what the big deal is. No one likes Indian's anyway.

But seriously, how is the spoof of the Indian any different than the other spoofed characters in this stupid ad? Are those offensive, too, then? Or are the offended folk only concerned about themselves.

**** off idiots. Go find something important to take a stand on.
