Time magazine cover with breastfeeding
The 3-year-old kid suckling from his mother's teet on the cover of Time Magazine is NOT too old to breastfeed ... so says a powerful breastfeeding organization -- but they do have one gripe.

TMZ spoke with Bettina Forbes -- co-founder of Best for Babes -- an advocacy group dedicated to educating moms about breastfeeding.

Forbes tells us, "We understand that Americans are uncomfortable with [the Time cover], but in cultures where babies wean themselves normally, usually somewhere around age 3 or 4, it is perfectly acceptable."

She adds, "Think of it this way -- some cultures have been drinking green tea for millennia, only recently has it become popular in the United States once the health benefits were understood and it was popularized by marketing ... breastfeeding is the same, it is accepted and valued in many cultures, but not yet fully in the U.S."

As for the gripe -- Forbes says her first choice would have been Jennifer Garner in the role of breastfeeder ... but "we're happy with anything that is an appealing image, provokes conversation, and ultimately desensitizes people to breastfeeding."

Yes

Americans are so weird. Breast are for feeding your children, yet you are reviled by what God gave you. Obesity is brought about by overfeeding while breastmilk only produces a limited supply.

@CAM- Your comment about it being the "norm" in Brasil for kids to breastfeed till the age of 5 is laughable.
HAVE YOU SEEN BRASILIAN CULTURE? It a sexualized society where kids prance around in parades half naked while the adults cheer them on. Walk on any beach down there and you will see 10 year-olds in thong bikinis. It's a disgusting culture if that's "normal" for them.

When you breastfeed a kid who's around 3, it's not to provide the kid with a complete meal. It's a lot of comfort sucking. It's a bonding and loving relationship between the child and his/her mother. My kids are very normal, well-adjusted teens now. Didn't wreck them. Just open your minds a little bit.

Look at how processed and bleached her hair is. She is passing on so many toxins to that child.

I'm glad to see this cover because there are some real folks who do this ish. My friend was hooked on the boob until he was 16 then two years of cold turkey, he killed 2 people for making fun of him. This may be horrible to look at for many of female acting guys but I bet if it was two with one with a piece of wood in his mouth, everything would be all fab!

The ONLY reason for this cover is for the shock value to make the mighty dollar. Breast feeding at any age is both personal and a very intimate thing. Something that was not portrayed here. Yuck.

I'm all for breastfeeding...a source of nourishment for babies because they CAN'T eat solid food. I think once your child can feed him or herself using a spoon and fork, it's time to seriously wean. FYI...my daughter weaned herself at 6 months.

A child MAY "naturally" wean themselves at the age of 3-4.... BUT... a woman's body WILL NOT produce BREASTMILK for that long... BREASTMILK is only produced for about 12-18 months... and once a woman starts menstruating again after giving birth (typically 6-12 months after birth) her "breastmilk" production will decrease (it's all about the HORMONE LEVELS) naturally...

That woman on the cover is NOT producing ANY MILK... THAT is OBVIOUS

It's OBVIOUS that TIME is having some real "issues"... and the days of that mag are probably numbered...
