It's not the darkest timeline for "Community" fans, but it's close -- creator Dan Harmon is out as showrunner after Sony Pictures Television opted not to renew his contract.

Sony had clashed with Harmon for quite sometime, reports Vulture, so the news did not come as a total shock. Harmon's most publicized dust-up was with one of the show's stars, Chevy Chase, which included Harmon playing an obscenity-laced voicemail Chase had left for him to a room full of people.

Harmon blogged last night that he learned the news the same way everyone else did, via press release. In fact, Harmon said he hasn't even so much as spoken to Sony since NBC renewed the show for a fourth season last week.

He wrote, "Do not believe anyone that tells you on Monday that I quit or diminished my role so I could spend more time with my loved ones, or that I negotiated and we couldn’t come to an agreement, etc. It couldn’t be less true because, just to make this clear, literally nobody called me."

Inspector Spacetime could not be reached for comment.

WHAT IN THE WORLD

Dan Harmon was the heartbeat of Community. A fiercely creative genius of a heartbeat. He meticulously pushed the superb cast to great comedic heights making the show one of the most innovative and cerebrally funny programs on TV in a long time. I was hooked after viewing the first episode. Community soared to silly, rip roaring, quick-paced levels which made me laugh out loud many, many times. I watched some episodes repeatedly for that good humor natural high only shows like Community can bring.
Revealing to the world what bullying cowards they are, NBC and Sony collectively and viciously sucker punched a hole in Community’s chest and tore out its heart, the genius of Dan Harmon. A body cannot live without its heart. Community was brilliantly funny with Dan Harmon’s steady heartbeat keeping this great show alive. Now that its heartbeat is gone, this show will fast track to an inevitable, unwarranted and unnecessary demise. Thanks NBC and Sony for brutally butchering a superb show created by a genius. No wonder your network can’t rise above the gutter.
