Mark-Paul Gosselaar

I LOVED 'Saved by the Bell'

But the Writing ...

Everyone can chill out -- Zack Morris says he didn't totally slam "Saved by the Bell" ... and insists his words were "taken out of context" in a controversial interview.

TMZ just spoke to Mark-Paul Gosselaar about the Yahoo! story in which he's quoted as saying of 'SBTB' ... "It's not a great show." Those words ignited an uproar on the Internet this week, but Mark told us, "I'm proud of that show and have no problem talking about it."

Mark does admit calling the show's writing "cheesy"... but says, "That's why people like it! I wasn't saying it was a bad show, just that the writing reflected" '80s cheesiness.

MPG says he's "bummed" his words were twisted, and adds ... "everything I've ever done after the show has pointed to me having nothing but respect for it."

Go Tigers!

We reached out to the writer of the Yahoo! post, and he says, "I stand by my story 100 percent." He says Mark's quote, "It's not a great show. The writing is kind of hokey" ... is verbatim, and on tape.

Writing was cheesy, obviously, but was a fun show in it's own way.
Screech was hilarious later on Celebrity Fit Club when was tougher skinned than people thought...the way he called Harvey out to fight, poppin' veins :D
Plus we got to watch the girls on Saved by the Bell grow up into gorgeous babes, most of 'em my age...

This gossellar guy looks like a real goon now. And then there's "Screech" the class act that started making his own porno movies, the redhead chick that "starred" in Showgirls and the latino guy that was charged with rape at one time. Boy, you may have "nothing but respect" for that crap show and it's "actors" buddy, but you won't find anyone else who does.

Grew up on that show. Not afraid to say I still watch reruns as a 30 yr old man. "I'm so excited! I'm so excited! I'm so...so...scaaared!"

I will forever love SBTB and I loved Zack. I think people should give him a break. Certain things might have seemed cheesy, but I think it had such a charm and it still does upon watching that I run with it and feel it and there's nothing wrong it. I might go watch an episode now!

It wasn't any cheesier than any other show in their demographic. It was a hit because it came on Saturday mornings, appealed to kids who were starting to outgrow cartoons. If it had been deep and meaningful, it wouldn't have lasted one season.

He is allowed to comment on his body of work. The show was cheesy and the writing and some of the characters where absurd.

Does it REALLY matter what this dude said? Anyone who grew up in HS with that show gets what he is saying. I was a corny show, but I have some great memories with some still great friends watching that show hungover on Saturday mornings.

Well if he felt they were cheesy he should've either left the show or voiced his opinion then in the early 90's when people like me watched the show. Don't down the show now, because they no longer fund your bank account.

Holy cow, why would anyone argue with that? The show was terrible, but so what? People loved it, and part of the reason why people still love it today is because it's so god awful.

and if you think the writing wasn't hokey, you need a checkup from the neck up.

He's right. What's the big deal? As an adult watching this show years later.. the show isn't exactly well written. It's like MPG says.. it's cheesy and it's not a great show really.. but that's sort of part of its charm, I guess.
People are just getting dumber and dumber and have to make big issues out of nothing.

I remember my best friend and I always debating after school who was hotter Mark or Mario. I went for Mark and I still think I'm right, lol.

Yea the show was cheesy, but it was fun. And a good transition from cartoons. Mark is just speaking the truth. A lot of classics from when many of us were kids wern't exactly award winning material, but we still love em' . I'm sure a lot of us still love them so much because, if for no other reason, they remind us of simpler times, lol.

This story deserves a giant So What! It was a kids' show - the writing was cheesy? No kidding. People liked the show; he gained a career starter and has his own opinion. Nothing to see here.
