Dead at 69

6/13/2012 6:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Henry Hill has died at the age of 69.
Henry Hill -- the former mobster whose life story became the basis for the movie "Goodfellas" -- died today at the age of 69 ... TMZ has learned.

TMZ spoke with Hill's girlfriend Lisa ... who told us Hill passed away in an L.A. hospital Tuesday after a long battle with an undisclosed illness.

Lisa tells us, "He had been sick for a long time ... his heart gave out."

We're told Hill had focused on mending relationships with estranged family members in recent years ... and Lisa tells us he had made tremendous progress before he died.

Hill leaves behind two children.

Hill was famously portrayed by Ray Liotta in the 1990 classic "Goodfellas."

Hill's exploits in the mob world were legendary -- but he prided himself on reforming later in life ... and became a frequent guest on the Howard Stern show.

hmmm "reformed?" I don't think so but hope so.
I heard him on a "call in" to some talk show segment when "Goodfellas" or his wife and children's book just came out and he WAS NOT in any way, shape or form, "reformed". He was smacking and talking crazy and the host---I believe it was Geraldo Rivera--called him on it because he was so obviously high and still very much on drugs...even on the air.

Reformed huh...I remain less skell in the world...

Some people are a little confused here between the Good Fellas movie and the real person who was no angel and was a hard line criminal running with gangsters who would slit your throat or put a bullet through your head and think nothing of it if they were provoked or you had something they wanted. This is were this Henry Hill came from and the life he chose to live.
Hill continued his criminal ways during and after being tossed from the witness protection program because he was still in contact with some old criminal associates, other than the ones he ratted on to get out of a long prison stretch for drug trafficking, again a choice he made. Hollywood pimps made him a kind of celebrity but he was just a low level street thug, no better than Paul Vario / Tommy Desemone or Jimmy Buke , his former partners in crime.
