Richard Belzer

at TV Festival

6/12/2012 2:04 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

2:44 PM PDT -- Belzer has issued a statement to TMZ ... saying, "My grandfather represented Israel in the UN before it was made a nation. I'm a Jewish comedian, and there's this new thing out, it's called satire, irony and historical reference."

He adds, "To say that a Jew can't do that gesture as homage to Chaplin's masterpiece, 'The Great Dictator' is like Muslim extremists killing a cartoonist for disparaging Mohammed in his art."

2:32 PM PDT --
A rep for Belzer tells TMZ ... Richard was involved in a conversation with a reporter about the Charlie Chaplin movie, "The Great Dictator" ... when Richard decided to re-enact a scene from the movie when Charlie's character gave a mock Nazi salute.

The rep says Belzer is a "Jewish comedian" and is upset and insulted that anyone would assume he would deliver the Nazi salute in a "negative" way.

"Law & Order" star Richard Belzer threw up the Nazi salute on the red carpet at a TV festival in Monte Carlo earlier today ... because he's an idiot.

67-year-old Belzer -- who reportedly grew up in a Jewish family -- also stuck two fingers on his upper lip, in what appears to be an attempt to simulate the infamous Hitler mustache.

Belzer also bent over and stuck his ass out at the paparazzi ... for some unknown reason.

0612_RICHARD_BELZER_rameyIt's not the first time Belzer has thrown the Nazi salute in public -- he pulled the "Heil Hitler" schtick during an appearance on Hannity back in 2009.

Belzer is a Jewish man mocking Hitler, to say he cant do this because Hitler was a bad person is nonsence. TMZ live offered the comparison of a white man singing a ice cube song and saying the "N" word. that is NOT an accurate comparison unless the white person is a white known racist. A more accurate comparison is if me as a black woman where to start yelling "white power" in public. No one would be thinking OMG look at the black white supremacist ! Its called satire people look it up.

It's just like the N word. Blacks say it's OK for them, but no one else. Either something is offensive or it isn't. It can't be offensive for some people but a legitimate form of expression for others.

While Chaplin may have done a good job parodying Adolf Hitler. He was eclipsed by Moe Howard (Moses Harry Horwitz)
I think even Richard Belzer would agree with that.

This is the first time I've ever heard him or anyone refer say he's a comedian. Something tells me he's the only one laughing.

It isn't just the "Hitler" salute; its called the Bellamy salute. AMERICANS used to use it when the national anthem played. Learn your history, TMZ.

Who gives a flying ****? First of all HE IS JEWISH, so he can do whatever the hell he wants when it comes to this.

Second, seriously America get the **** over these stupid petty things you call "outrageous". People in other countries are dying due to poverty, disease and war and you're bitching and moaning in disgust because an ACTOR or a TV SHOW decided to joke around about Hitler (which again he CAN BECAUSE HE IS A JEW. Just like blacks say the Nword all the time)

Get the hell over this stupid petty **** and get some real problems

Is there a Nazi salute in a positive way?

Belzer has always been an ass. Back in the 80s he had a talk show and had Hulk Hogan on as a guest. Belzer insisted on Hulk putting him in a sleeper hold. Hulk did and Belzer hit his head after he was let go. He then sued Hulk for $5 million dollars.
