Ashton Kutcher is trying to squeeze blood from a stone ... 'cause his production company is suing the broke-ass State of California for $1.4 mil ... after the DMV allegedly backed out of a reality show deal.

In the lawsuit, obtained by TMZ, Kutcher's Katalyst Media -- which produced "Punk'd" and "Beauty and the Geek" -- claims it inked a deal with the CA DMV back in 2010 to participate in a reality show that would "capture the variously humorous, emotional, dramatic, moving, humanizing and entertaining situations that arise on a daily basis" at the DMV.

In fact, Katalyst claims it hammered out a "formal written agreement" with the DMV to shoot footage in the summer and fall of 2011. The deal called for 4 initial episodes with an option of 6 more.

Katalyst claims it spent hundreds of thousands of dollars gearing up for the show -- only to get a 5-sentence letter from a DMV honcho 6 weeks later ... trying to back out of the deal.

According to the suit, the DMV honcho said the project wouldn't be in the DMV's "best interests."

Obviously, Katalyst is pissed -- and wants at least $1.44 million to make things right.

Beef with the DMV? Get in line ...

Not sure anyone would want to sit and watch footage of a DMV office, you can barely drag most of us there for an appointment.

Watching a show about people standing in line at the D.M.V is about as exiting as watching grass grow. Dumb idea.

They were obviously going for a Parking Wars type show but the Mayor of Philly has said he hates that the show as allowed to film there. He thinks it hurts tourism. I think it would be less of an issue here since tourists don't have to go to the DMV.

Of course it's not in the DMV's best interest. But don't worry, we all know how big of a joke the DMV is. Take a number and sit down!

I hate this arrogant ass! He votes Democrat to get government bigger so they can act like asses to you and me, yet when they act like asses to him, he acts like an elitist cry baby! The DMV should counter sue him for everything he is worth and California judges should award the DMV everything he is worth! The state of California IS broke and can use all of his money to pay for these government workers that he just adores! He must be an evil SOB and because of that deserves only pain and embarrassment. I hate this guy.

As much as I'm trying to be optimist when I look at him and the choices he is making I feel people are perhaps right to criticize and question his choices. I feel he could do far better as a human being and as a man, but obviously he has no real friends to speak the truth to him and tell him he needs to change many things in his life because thus far he is known for his personal life and the drama that goes around it. He may have some talent but around all the nonsense that he does leaves people pretty unhappy to even hear of him. As a Kabbalah follower he is not using any spirituality or common sense when it comes to his personal and carrier choices. And the people that surround him are most likely afraid to speak the truth because they're either lost and confused as he is, or either they're not his friends at all, they are just there for the ride. We are lucky if we find one or two exceptional human beings in our lifetime that can be our friends in every sense of the word. Not to mention that he separated from Demi Moore but has been chasing women desperately like there is no tomorrow. In the mean while he is not even yet divorced, and the many women that the media called them his" one night stands" those women got a lot of crap for being stupid enough to be involved with a married man, but here come Mila Kunis and it is okay for her to be involved with a married man, why because she is an actress? I feel there is no difference between her and those other women who slept with him knowing he is still legally married, it just happens that some people like Mila and so her behavior with him is acceptable, but the rest of the women got whole a lot of **** for doing exactly what she is doing. Ashton needs to take time away from Hollywood and from being in the spotlight ..,that is if he wants to change his life and make some good for his future...,if he doesn't he will reap the consequences of his actions.
