Flo Jo's Daughter

Headed to Olympic Trials

... to Sing

6/22/2012 11:55 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

Florence Griffith-Joyner's daughter is following in her mother's famous Olympic footsteps ... heading to the U.S. Track and Field trials later this month ... but the only thing she'll be running is her mouth.

Mary Joyner -- a 21-year-old aspiring singer -- recently competed on "America's Got Talent" ... and impressed some of the honchos who run the Team USA Olympic Track and Field Team.

In fact, a rep for the org. tells TMZ ... they were so blown away by her performance, they extended her an offer to sing the national anthem at the U.S Track and Field trials in Eugene, Oregon later this month.

The rep says, "It's great to see that Mary is achieving her goals and dreams just as her mother did."

In case you didn't know ... Mary's mother -- who passed away in 1998 -- won 3 Olympic gold medals in the 1988 Seoul games and was considered the fastest woman on the planet ... she holds the world record for both the 100 m and 200 m sprints.

Mary might strike gold herself ... she got 3 yes votes on "AGT," and will advance to the next round (below).

She's got beautiful eye's ... love green eye's with darker skin tones. Not a bad audition at all, she's got good tone and looked comfortable with the mic. Granted she was a little pitchy when she went for it towards the end, but considering how much autotune is used these days it's not like that would be a major issue. Good for her.

Some of you people really should be ashamed. What is this world coming to? Disrespecting the dead? Really, people? Insinuating that the fastest woman in the world was "probably taking steriods". GTFOH!!!
I'm just going to point something out...you almost never read this type of thing on "urban type" blogs; speaking badly about the dead, it is an unspoken/written rule & a complete NO-NO, you bastards! I'm glad to see this young lady was selected through to the next round. And her father, Al, is also an inspiration, and Lord does he have the white-est teeth! Gorgeous. A friend of mine told me years ago (who happens to be white, BTW) that the darkest people have the whitest teeth. At first I poo-poo'd her, then I started to take notice, and it's true. I've also witnessed that with many Africans, too. Just a littel side note there. But seriously, please be kinder to ANYONE (celebs, or otherwise) who are buried & gone.
Thank you!!!

She seems like a sweet girl and I wish her well, but the controversy surrounding her mother was huge. Flo-Jo had been a really strong athlete, winning races, and then her physique completely changed. She was booed off the track in Europe, because of suspected steroid use. She died so young. I always felt that they selfishly held back the truth, so that they could hold on to the world records and olympic medals, but owe it other young athletes thinking of doing the same thing.

Her dad has got to be the biggest cheerleader/ motivator on the planet. He puts everything he has into making the women in his family the best they can be.
It's too bad people still cast aspersions on Flo Jo's accomplishments. She was singled out for extensive drug testing by Olympic officials in 1988 and always tested clean. There won't be another like her for a very long time.

On September 21, 1998, Griffith-Joyner died in her sleep at the age of 38. The unexpected death was investigated by the sheriff-coroner's office, which announced on October 22 that the cause of death was suffocation during a severe epileptic seizure.[10] She was also found to have had a cavernous angioma, a congenital brain abnormality that made Joyner subject to seizures.[12] According to a family attorney, she had suffered a grand mal seizure in 1990, and had also been treated for seizures in 1993 and 1994. Griffith-Joyner's supporters claimed that the autopsy cleared her of allegations that she used performance-enhancing drugs. The Orange County coroner's office noted that the autopsy records showed that she did not die from drugs or banned substances and that tissue and organ tests revealed none of the changes associated with recent steroid use. Her husband had requested that Griffith-Joyner's body specifically be tested for steroids, but was informed that there was not enough urine in her bladder and that the test could not accurately be performed on other biological samples.[10]

Truth

Flo Jo retired from competitive track and field after her 1988 Olympic triumph. Griffith-Joyner was tested during competition and did not fail any drug tests. Mandatory drug testing came into effect, in the 1989 season.[10] After her death in 1998, Prince Alexandre de Merode, chairman of the International Olympic Committee's medical commission claimed that Joyner was singled out for rigorous drug testing during the 1988 Seoul Olympics because of steroid rumors. He told the New York Times that Manfred Donike at the time considered the foremost expert on drugs and sports, failed to discover banned substances during the testing.[11].
. Her husband stated that Griffith-Joyner was never interested in being a career sprinter, found the early nights and no-junk-food diet restrictive, and wanted to start a family as well as pursue interests in fashion design and crafts.[9]

Gee I wonder who's gonna win AGT!!! These talents shows have got to stop having sympathetic favorites. And, before you bash me for saying that. I myself am disabled. I know what it's like to be treated special. Yeah, at times it's nice to be treated special. But, most of the time it's nice to just be treated like a regular person!!

Why say later this month? The Track and Field Olympic Trials have already started and are going on already. Bruce Jenner was also in town being honored with other former Olympic track gold medalists.

Flo Jo always tested clean, back in the 90's before more sophisticated testing was discovered. Just like Marion Jones always tested clean, even through the 2000 Olympics, but was finally caught six years later. Maybe Flo Jo didn't use enhancing drugs, but just suddenly grew tree trunks for legs?

I think she's great and deserved to be in the quarter finals a whole lot more than Big Barry did! Howard Stern was right on the money with that! Congrats Mary!
