Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes Divorce

Was Her Breaking Point

6/29/2012 1:27 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Katie Holmes
filed for divorce primarily over Tom Cruise's fierce ties to Scientology, fearing that Tom would drag Suri deep into the church ... sources connected with the couple tell TMZ.

Our sources say ... Katie has never been fully committed to Scientology, even though she has had ties with the church.  We're told the couple had been arguing over Suri -- that she's now of the age where Scientology becomes a significant part of her life.

Sources familiar with the split tell us Katie is filing for sole legal custody -- as we first reported -- specifically because she does not want Tom to control decisions relating to religion.

Sources have told us that the divorce is NOT about money -- we're told Katie doesn't need Tom's money ... because she has plenty of it ... and will be well taken care of under the terms of the prenup.

To give you an idea of how fierce Tom's ties to the Church are -- a video featuring the actor discussing what Scientology means to him leaked onto YouTube in 2008. You gotta watch the whole thing.

In my opinion, Katie was a young girl who was infatuated with a movie celebrity, and when he charmed her and she was smitten and unable to see past the roses and infatuation. Then when reality set in after the marriage, it was too late. She was in over her head and had to stay for the full 5 years and had to plot and plan her way out of his crazy get herself and her daughter out safely....

Sad One

You can see the light that was in Katie's eyes when they first got married is gone. She looks very sad,and almost in pain. I am all for being faithful in MY OWN faith, but I would NEVER FORCE or ask my man to change his beliefs for mine, just as would know he would do the same for me. I am willing to learn about his faith, but not give up my beliefs for his. That is A Personal choice, and it is not something that should be FORCED or EXPECTED. I would want to give my child a choice, when he or she is old enough to let him or her decide for themselves, Go Katie, and be happy,You deserve to be happy. The world needs to realize we DO NOT NEED to know EVERYTHING about celebrities, they are as some people forget,PEOPLE too,and while I realize that they put themselves into the spotlight as actors or what ever the case may be,they too deserve respect and privacy in their private lives,we seem to forget that. We would not want our privacy invaded constantly, give them their space too, everyone has a bad day week or month sometimes. Its called being human.

Katie was Very Foolish to think that Their children would not be very exposed to Scientology, IF TOM is so fanatic over it.....and apparently, he is!

Katie was very foolish to think Their children would be immune to Scientology, if Tom is the true fanatic he appears to be about this "religion"....!

All religions are a cult...people need to get over the whole "he's a whack job because he believes in something other than the norm"

Hypocrites ... and thats the reason i'd never be religious and blindly follow one way of thinking. The world is too diverse for people to be so narrow-minded!

It sounds like he's just lost it. Totally rambling without making any sense. I don't blame Katie for wanting to get away from that. Nobody wants to be preached to all of the time, especially if you might not agree with the philosophy in the first place.

Why is he considered a whack job for believing so ardently in his religion and being so inspired by it? How is that different from Christians? There are some real believers there as well, who have faith in some pretty outrageous things. Why are aliens so much more ridiculous than, say, a holy ghost or a man who returns three days after he dies? If anything, the existence of aliens is more likely if you look at it scientifically. And, hey, maybe God created the aliens? Both religions counsel similar things - love, kindness, helping others, etc. Two different ways of going about it, same admirable goal.
