Andy Griffith
, an icon of TV, has died ... this according to Andy's close friend, former UNC President Bill Friday.

Griffith, who became famous for "The Andy Griffith Show," passed away at his home in Manteo, North Carolina this morning.

Friday broke the news to WITN News in North Carolina.

In addition to starring in his show and producing the subsequent "Mayberry R.F.D.," Griffith was a Grammy award-winning southern gospel singer.  Of course, Griffith also starred in the long-running series, "Matlock" and often made guest appearances in other shows, including "Dawson's Creek."

There's a famous statue of Andy and Opie -- played by Ron Howard -- in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Griffith was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush in 2005.

Hate to hear this. What a special person and entertainer. He has always been such a inspiration. His shows and stories always had that wonderful moral at the end. I am sure that he will have his wings shortly. Thank you for all the memories and smiles along the way. You will be missed. Thought and prayer to your family. They are the lucky ones they got to spend a life time with you. Thankfully we have your shows to continue your stories to our future generations...Thank you for all the you gave. RIP with the angels...

I can't even begin to express how much this saddens me.

Few actors can convey the warmth, sincerity and sense of connection and belonging to a place and time as You and Your characters have over the years.

You will be truly missed but the messages you have taught throughout your career will forever live within our hearts and souls and hopefully, be passed along to future generations for years to come.

Thank you Andy for showing us all that it is OK to be one of the Good Guys.

Rest in Peace……………

Sheriff Taylor, may you rest in peace forever. Say hello to Auntie Bea, Goober, Barney Fife, Floyd and those who made our lives better by watching you and your friends in Mayberry.
Also it was so good to see you in "No Time for Sargents" and "Angel on my Shoulder"

Wish the "stars" of today would learn a thing or two from his offscreen character. A generation long gone. RIP

We are mourning the death of a very special man who touched our lives so much through this many tasteful and beautiful TV shows. We also love listening to his recording of sacred music, often on Sunday morning. Rest in peace, Andy. You lived life well!
