Andy Griffith
, an icon of TV, has died ... this according to Andy's close friend, former UNC President Bill Friday.

Griffith, who became famous for "The Andy Griffith Show," passed away at his home in Manteo, North Carolina this morning.

Friday broke the news to WITN News in North Carolina.

In addition to starring in his show and producing the subsequent "Mayberry R.F.D.," Griffith was a Grammy award-winning southern gospel singer.  Of course, Griffith also starred in the long-running series, "Matlock" and often made guest appearances in other shows, including "Dawson's Creek."

There's a famous statue of Andy and Opie -- played by Ron Howard -- in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Griffith was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush in 2005.

Andy Griffith was not America's sheriff, he turned out to be ( along with that little idiot Opie) just another anti american liberal socialist. America's sheriff is Joe Arpaio standing up for American and its free legal citizens

The lights have gone out in Mayberry, Godspeed Andy. Thank you for the Norman Rockwell America you gave us. I wish it could be that way again.

I have been an Andy Griffith fan my whole life. Still today I watch the episodes over and over again. I always took away the message that each episode had. Andy Griffith was not only an entertainer he was a true to life goood person in every since of the meaning. You will be missed Andy, give Barney hell now that you're back together.

Did you ever wonder why the badge on his uniform above his pocket had six points, but the patch on his upper sleeve only had five???

One other thing to reflect on with the loss of Andy Griffith was his profound effect on the careers of law enforcement officers born in the early 60's. Andy Griffith was the pivotal writer of his program "The Sheriff without a gun " became one of the main themes or lessons throughout the many episodes. Those entering Policing in the early 80's who grew up watching repeats on antenna TV ( and I do mean antenna not the cable channel) were better for those after school repeats with Andy Taylor. We must also note the truer to life family values expressed when compared to other shows of the period.
This was done While Andy portrayed a single parent matched only by the Rifleman series. Andy and his mostly lost supporting cast will be forever missed as they were part of a slowly fading breed.

Well at least the duo is back together again. Griffith & Knotts had some of the best comedic chemistry ever. Show me a pair that can match them now.. Go on, show me.
