Andy Griffith
, an icon of TV, has died ... this according to Andy's close friend, former UNC President Bill Friday.

Griffith, who became famous for "The Andy Griffith Show," passed away at his home in Manteo, North Carolina this morning.

Friday broke the news to WITN News in North Carolina.

In addition to starring in his show and producing the subsequent "Mayberry R.F.D.," Griffith was a Grammy award-winning southern gospel singer.  Of course, Griffith also starred in the long-running series, "Matlock" and often made guest appearances in other shows, including "Dawson's Creek."

There's a famous statue of Andy and Opie -- played by Ron Howard -- in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Griffith was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush in 2005.

Another great actor and amazing human being has passed. It was a pleasure and an honor to have you grace humanity by plying your talents for the overall betterment of mankind. To his loved ones, the nation morns his passing as much as you do but we can all take comfort in the knowledge that we will be reunited with him at the end of time. God bless and comfort you.

I loved the Andy Griffith Show. A true classic. I got to see Andy speak at the Mayberry Days in Mt. Airy, NC a few yrs. back. A great time down there.

Thank you, Andy Griffith. I own all the episodes and watch them twice a year. My blood pressure goes down when the whistling starts. Amazing that that show is such a big part of my life: twice a week at lunch time I eat my sandwich, watch a show or two, and take a nap, always waking up for the recap at the end of each episode, . . . refreshed from a few minutes in Mayberry, USA.

We're very sorry to hear that Andy passed away. But he seemed to have a good life, and gave this world a lot of laughs and good memories! The entertainment world and viewers could learn a lot from Andy and Michael Landon if they cared enough to watch/listen. Their shows were humorous, heart touching, while being wholesome clean cut family programming, which you rarely see anymore. Now his show will be even more treasured by MANY people!
The world has lost a very loved icon. Prayers are with his family and friends. May you RIP Andy-thank you for the special memories. You were loved by millions for many different reasons!!!!!!!
