Natalie Wood

Death Certificate Changed

7/7/2012 4:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Natalie Wood's death certificate has been changed from "Accident" to "Undetermined" ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... the L.A. County Coroner filed documents making the change late last month.

Members of Wood's family tell TMZ ... detectives from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department -- which has reopened the death investigation -- paid them a visit earlier today informing them of the change. They tell us ... detectives told them the change was made in part because some of the bruises on Wood's body were inconsistent with death by drowning.

Family members add ... they were told at this point authorities can't prove definitively Wood's death was accidental or the result of foul play. Detectives did tell family members Wood's death was definitely from drowning, but the way she ended up in the water is unclear.

Wood died November 29, 1981 after an alcohol-fueled party on a boat off Catalina with Robert Wagner and Christopher Walken on board.

Law enforcement sources tell us their investigation is still active.

This is certainly a step in the right direction. I'm happy for Natalie's family.

She's been dead so long, people say, Natalie...WHO?

It's a good thing she doesn't look like she could be Obamas daughter, or Wagoner would be under arrest right now.

All over a silly arguement. Robert told her to take a shower and cool off, and she said she'd rather wash up on the beach.

Cops didn't care 30 years ago. Now some nobody is trying to get some attention.......TOO LATE.

Wow, how many decades old is this? Good to see the cops have taken the time out from night-sticking the color folk to bring up something totally dated and irrelevant. RIP Natalie, you were HAWT! I certainly would have ridden you hard and put you away wet (not as wet as your hubby and Walken left you... but wet).

The saga continues...........................

I'm glad that Robert Wagner (or any wealthy Hollywood star) was at least in part defeated on this one.

I disagree with Jillian. This woman died over 30 years ago & if she were not a celebrity and somebody trying to sell a book, it would have been a closed case. Give it and her a rest. This will drag on forever based on speculation.

Commit these precious and scarce police resources to today's unsolved cases that were not accidents. I am sure today's victims and families would appreciate it. And if Natalie Wood's family want to continue to drag this on, let THEM pay for it!

How can such a big star die in such a suspicious manner and there never be a proper investigation done? Let's hope that once and for all there will be justice for Natalie!!!

this is the dumbest waste of resources and money - they can't prove anything - statute of limitations is up on every thing except murder 1 which can never be proved - there is a back log of 10 years on rape kits here, so lets waste what little man power we have on a case that will have no outcome!!

Let it GO , RJ doesn't need this nor do his kids, one of which has some "serious" problems.

No offense really ... but who the hell cares at this point, anyway?

What ewas the point of this idiotic charade? Its obvious Robert Wagner had something to do with it. They should have made that stick way back when.

This was a stupid waste of time. Cause of death to "Undetermined" ... this accomplished nothing.

No Statute of Limitations on cold blooded murder.....I'm guessing RJ is gonna be cellmates with Scott Peterson on "Condemed Row" in the hotel on the bay......just sayin'

But yeah, I would've tapped it too....just like Walken was thinkin'
