Ernest Borgnine, the legendary actor perhaps best known for his role in the movie "Marty," passed away today at the age of 95.

His longtime spokesman, Harry Flynn, told The Associated Press that Borgnine died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his family by his side.

Borgnine won an Oscar for "Marty" in 1955 and also starred in movies such as "From Here to Eternity" and "Bad Day at Black Rock."

On the small screen, Borgnine played Quinton McHale in the 1960s show "McHale's Navy."

Borgnine served a total of 10 years in the United States Navy, the last four coming after he re-enlisted when the U.S. entered World War II.

First Andy Griffith, now this. This is not good. The great ones are leaving us all at once.Ernie Borgnine was larger than life, a force of nature. No wonder he lived to be 95. He was hilarious in McHale's Navy. Then there was his oscar-winning portrayal of "Marty," as well as "From Here to Eternity," "The Wild Bunch," and many more. There was even a whole Simpsons episode built around him. I'll be popping "Emperor of the North" into the ole VCR tonight in tribute to him!

So bummed. He just seemed like one of those guys you sort of expect to live forever.

He was never the handsome leading man but he was a very good actor. He also looked damn good. Do you think his wife's line of skin care products work that well? RIP Mr Borgnine

Yup

This is sad. Ernest Borgnine was old school hollywood; he remained completely relevant into his 90's. He was great in "Red", which came out a few years ago, and delighted my kids as the voice of Mermaidman in "Spongebob". RIP, Ernie; the world is a much poorer place without you in it...

He spent 10 years in the Navy in real life, even reenlisting after the start of WWII. Another person from our great generation gone (not great because of his celebrity, but because of his service to our country).

Many don't know that he made millions of dollars in the cell phone industry. He was one of the first to buy cell phone spectrums from the federal government and resell them to the market; a pretty good businessman.
