A heavily armed gunman opened fire in the middle of a packed midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" ... killing at least a dozen moviegoers and reportedly wounding at least 50 others (including a 3-month-old baby) in Aurora, Colorado.

The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old James Holmes from Aurora, CO.

Cops say Holmes was wearing a bulletproof vest, riot helmet and a gas mask when he entered the Century 16 Movie Theater through an emergency exit and began randomly firing at movie patrons. Witnesses say he tossed tear gas into the crowd before he started shooting.

Police arrested Holmes in the movie theater parking lot -- and federal agents evacuated his apartment building --after he "made a statement about explosives" in the building (see below).

After a thorough sweep of the complex, officials determined the building was safe.

Holmes reportedly used 4 guns during the shooting -- a rifle, a shotgun, a handgun and another firearm that's being compared to an AK-47. Cell phone video taken from inside the lobby of the movie theater showed the chaos following the shooting.

One witness tells CNN Holmes did not resist arrest when cops moved in -- "He did not put up a fight."

At this point, police say there is no evidence of a second gunman.

Hundreds of police and FBI agents have already been assigned to the investigation.

A 15-year-old witness told CNN he was able to escape the theater when the gunman stopped firing to reload one of his guns.

For me this brings up memories of a shooting that at occured several years ago at my local theater. My best friend and I were on or way there to hang out after the last midnight showing. We drove up and the parking lot was full of people and police. Were told 2 men went in to the theater to rob it. They shot one employee in the arm, it was our friend who sacrificed himself by taking the robbers upstairs away from everyone to open the safe. We later found out that he was shot in the head because the robber felt he didnt open the safe fast enough. I still think of him fondly and miss him. My memories of the fun times I had at that theater are forever tarnished by the tragic loss. I still wonder what would have happen if i had not been late getting ready that night.

I am appalled, angry and in disbelief of the media…
Every communication released by the media sensationalizes this event. The murderers name is mentioned over and over and branding that name into the public’s mind. Murder is murder, whether it’s one or a mass, ask any victims of relatives or friends, they don’t care at the moment about others killed; it’s not being insensitive, they are in such grief that all they can think about is the loss of life of a loved one, and then revenge enters the mind. AND then the media offers the “CHALLENGE”, this is now the largest mass murder in the United States; let’s see who can top this? Many of these people do it for the attention and don’t care about the consequences. Let’s see who next gets his or her 15 minutes of fame.
Have we learned anything from past crimes, or about copycat killers?
All the media can think of is ‘getting the scoop’ regardless of what the consequences are. The victims are those who died, those injured, those that survived and the rest of the country.
What is it going to take before we run reports through a compassionate editor(s)?

What, no racial comments Tmz users?!!! Every time there is a story involving a black person, you see all the racist TMZ users come out and spew their racist crap. If this was a black person who had done this, I GUARANTEE the TMZ users on here would not be saying "Oh he was schizophrenic" or had mental issues like they are doing with this creep James Holmes. Stop making excuses. Debating gun control laws would be the last thing on your minds.

If it was a black guy who did it, the RACIST users on this site would be calling him an "animal" and saying "all blacks are violent",etc. like they always do. TMZ users are so racist and hypocritical. Unbelievable!!! I know i'll get a bunch of thumbs down for these comments but I do not care. You guys are SO concerned with the muslims, hispanics, the blacks, etc. that you wont even look in your own back yard.

IT IS ALWAYS YOUNG WHITE MALES committing these HORRIFIC CRIMES. Call me a racist if you'd like, I am not one at all btw, but this is the truth! There's a pattern here. It is your OWN people committing the worst crimes but you still want to look down on other races and other communities.

I am not trying to downplay the seriousness of this at all just pointing out the hypocrisy of TMZ users and many white people in America's attitudes towards blacks and non-whites. Why is it that these mass murders are almost 99% of the time done by lonely, young, WHITE males?! Notice I said MASS murders. No one is denying that a lot of young black males are involved in violence and gangs, etc. but not on this level. Mass murders in this country are almost always committed by young white males.

Timothy Mcveigh, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold and now James Holmes.

What is the problem with some young WHITE males that they snap and commit huge massacres like this? Something is very wrong here. Society needs to stop ignoring these people who are loners and show signs of disturbance.

I understand Holmes was a brilliant student and never had any trouble with the law except for a speeding ticket which is nothing. But once again like the others he was a loner who kept to himself. Society needs to quit ignoring these people. These people often have no friends and were usually bullied as children. Then they grow up into disturbed and angry adults who feel society is against them and ignores them so to get "revenge" they pull crimes like this. But again, when you ignore these members of society, horrible tragedies like these occur.

And I do believe gun laws need to be stricter. Why the HELL WAS HOLMES ABLE TO PURCHASE 6000 ROUNDS of AMMUNITION ANYWAY?! That's a red flag right there! HELLO!

Bottom line this is a HORRIBLE, senseless tragedy. I watched the coverage all last night and this morning and I was in tears. I am so hurt for all the victims and their families/loved ones.
