James Holmes

Non-Violent Video Game

7/20/2012 12:47 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

James Holmes liked Guitar Hero
The man who slaughtered a dozen people and wounded 59 was obsessed with a video game that was anything but violent ... Guitar Hero.

We've learned ... one of James Holmes' classmates at the University of California at Riverside played Guitar Hero with the shooter all the time, and "for hours."

The male student is telling friends he is "shocked," never having had a clue that Holmes had a propensity for violence.

It's an interesting side note, because people with violent tendencies often act them out in various ways, and video games are definitely an outlet.

Another classmate of Holmes tells TMZ Holmes was never a trouble-maker.  The two of them were in virtually every class together yet he was so quiet she hardly noticed him.

I am beginning to think this kid had a brain tumor. You don't go from excellence academically, zero past problems, zero indication of violent tendencies to thinking he is the Joker. I know that brain tumors can change a persons personality dramatically, depending on the location of it. To have such a stellar background to this makes no sense at all. None. He didn't even fight the cops. Something is not right with this at all. I hope they check for a brain tumor. A mental breakdown would show some signs to people in the past who knew him and there were none.

Whatever be the diagnosis of this single case, it has to be noted that the rate of shootings - including massacres - massacres in the USA (with no defense reason) accounts for 30.000 victims/year: much more than the sum of all terroristic attacks of the last decades; nonetheless, it is incredibly low, if we only consider the large and easy availability of guns and, above all, given the popularity of violent video-games and films amongst the youth. The two factors - research at hand - make an explosive mix and may prompt violent behaviours, even in non aggressive but weak persons, more open to the impact of media. Real experts have put aside any doubt about this result, yet confirmed by tons of scientific research. Only ignorant or interested people continue to deny it.
