Joe Paterno

Statue Removed

7/22/2012 6:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

0722_paterno_statue_gettyThe statue honoring Penn State football coach Joe Paterno has been removed from in front of Beaver Stadium.

The statue was removed via forklift as 100-150 students watched, chanting, "We are Penn State."

Penn State president Rodney Erickson announced the statue will be stored in a "secured location."

Erickson released a statement saying, "I now believe that, contrary to is original intention, Coach Paterno's statue has become a source of division and an obstacle to hearing in our university and beyond. For that reason, I have decided that it is in the best interest of our university and public safety to remove the statue and store it in a secure location."

The decision came 10 days after a report conducted by former FBI director Louis J. Freeh conclude that Paterno, as well as other top Penn State administrators, had concealed the allegations of child sexual abuse made against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

A new report by CBS Sports says the NCAA will hand down "unprecedented" penalties against the school on Monday morning.

Paterno passed away six months ago.

By the time all the trials are over, the last of the victims paid and fines what do you think the likelyhood is that Penn St. is going to be wishing Joe Paterno never stepped foot on the campus?

that was the right decision, for those that say Paterno did so much for the college, what about the founders who financially backed it with their own money to get it started, and donated millions of dollars of real estate, there wouldn't even be a Penn State. what about the citizens who fought at Gettysburg battle nearby? with them there wouldn't even be a Pennsylvania. I'm sure they would be apalled that their efforts have come to this sickening conclusion.

Why place this POS statue in storage?? It should be destroyed! I bet the college plans to store this sick phuckers statue and then at a later time put it back right where it was once all the attention dies down! They want this to be swept under the rug...hmmm sounds familiar??
If the school president had the balls, he would do what was right and have that effn thing destroyed!

The difference between SMU and Penn State is the student athletes were in on the crap going on at SMU... not at Penn State, some of the victims ended up going there. The only ones that will be punished by a 'death penalty' are the current students and athletes, no one else.

I disagree with this decision and I'm a Roll Tide fan. You can't take Joe Paterno's success as a coach away from him, and removing the statue will have a strong negative impact on the student body, while it will do nothing to undo Sandusky's crimes. Penn St has a personnel problem, not a football problem.

It is for the best. When the story was first developing I really thought that they were keeping the truth from Joe, but the recent report that came out shows that even if he didn't know every detail, he knew enough that he should have done more.
