Penn State football coach Bill O'Brien says he's fighting to keep his team together after the unprecedented NCAA sanctions ... and claims some universities are playing dirty to get his players.

O'Brien, who has the unenviable task of cleaning up Joe Paterno's mess, was on "Mike and Mike in the Morning" to react to the NCAA rulings -- $60 million fine, vacating 111 wins, 4-year bowl ban, and loss of scholarships.

O'Brien said the hardest part of the punishment is "the fact the NCAA said these guys [Penn State football players] can transfer without penalty." O'Brien added ... he's met with the team and believes most of his players are staying at PSU.

As for the players who are leaving for other schools -- O'Brien said, "I respect the coaching profession, but a lot of coaches ... they have recruited our players without the courtesy of calling me."

O'Brien was not specific about which teams skirted him to get to his players. PSU's star running back Silas Redd is reportedly considering a jump to USC.

O'Brien said he plans to attract future recruits by "talking to them about the degree from PSU. They have to understand to have a PSU degree in their back pocket is a big deal."

O'Brien added ... the sanctions are harsh, but ... "It is what it is."

He was in charge of the football program, he knew what was going on and he did nothing. He would be on trial right now if cancer didn't get him first. All the coaches they knew or saw what was going on at Penn State should be brought to trial.

Teams are giving player the opportunity to leave a dead program, there's nothing wrong with that. If he wants to get mad, get mad at the adminstration, especially deadPa for hiding a pedo.

I don't understand the purpose of these football sanctions. And who is getting the $60... million? You can bet it won't be any of the victims : )

This deal punishes the WRONG people and the whole university. FIRE the people who covered it up or looked away. And I mean EVERYONE all the way to the top -- no pensions, gone. Then let the authorities pursue them.

Why take the wins away? Why punish the football players.....unless they knew about it or were involved? And if they were involved then ARREST THEM.

If I had a son who was a stand-out football player I damn well would pull him out of Penn State. HE wasn't the one doing the little boys in the locker room, HE wasn't the one covering it up. Why is this now HIS problem? Why hurt HIS future?

Not to defend Joe Paterno and the university leadership because I don't know what these people were thinking....... But if the police investigated Sandusky TWICE and would not prosecute him then just what in the hell were Paterno and the people at the university suppose to do? Fire Sandusky? Why? On what grounds?

If they knew something was going on and the police wouldn't pursue it they should have told Sandusky -- Look dude, we know what you did even if the police won't charge you. (A leopard doesn't change it 's spots.) You're going to resign and you are permanently gone.

I never understood why the police felt there wasn't enough evidence to charge Sandusky the first two times. Supposedly one of the moms even went to the police about him but there wasn't enough evidence.. Unbelievable.

Steelers suck

Everything you people have written here is exactly why the sanctions on Penn State were what they were. The NCAA was trying to make ALL colleges realize that it's NOT about the damn football team. They are supposed to be there for an education. You freaking people are no better than the Penn State mentality. It's all about football, screw a decent education that most of them will need when they don't make it to the NFL.

Sorry, but I won't hire anyone from Ped State because it would be too much of a distraction to everyone.

They are football players so I assume they can move fast. Runnnn don't walk as fast as you can away from Penalty State.

That's such a shame that innocent people continue lose their dreams and be hurt by this. If one **ONE** of these men had balls and took him down AT THE BEGINNING. Penn State would be revered. They chose the opposite. I feel really bad for the students who are also victimized academically.

Rude Boy

Why would other university reps call O'Brien first? It's not like the players need permission or a blessing to move on better deals. These kids are rightfully thinking about their futures and that doesn't need to be filtered thru O'Brien. Penn State football hierarcy let them down (in a BIG way) so there's no point in showing some unneeded protocol to move on.

Awe, poor Penn State, how inconvenient. Nobody there in any capacity has any right to complain about "courtesy." Whatta puss! DEAL WITH IT.

If those other universities had gone through the coach, would he have said it was perfectly OK for them to go after his players and done nothing to stop them? Please. He wants to prevent them from leaving so he can try to salvage what's left of his team.

So, what, is he trying to get some sympathy or what? Yeah, that'll happen. I hope other schools take all the best players and that PSU's football program completely crumbles. That would be justice.

Sit down, shut up and take the hit. It's too early for spin control. Come back in 4 years or so. UNtil then, I don't want to hear about it.
