Skateboard Company

Backlash Over

Asian Slur T-Shirt

8/2/2012 12:40 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

A major skateboard company is being accused of putting "racism for sale" ... after selling a shirt featuring two Asian men under the words, "Gooks of Hazzard."

The company under fire is Baker Skateboards ... which is owned by skating legend Andrew Reynolds ... who's been featured as a character in several of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater video games.

Baker is currently selling the "Hazzard" shirt on its website. The shirt features two Asian men in a car named the "General Li." One of the men is pro skater Don "The Nuge" Nguyen -- who's sponsored by Baker.

The shirt also features a tagline, "Good Orr Boys" ... a play on the stereotype of an Asian accent.

But while it appears The Nuge approves of the shirt, the Asian American Justice Center feels differently ... a rep for the organization tells us it's "unacceptable for Baker Skateboards to create a depiction of Asian Americans which uses racial slurs and perpetuates racist stereotypes.”

The org. adds, "Baker Skateboards, and the outlets that sell this shirt, should be aware that use of the term 'gook' on their apparel is offensive and quite simply amounts to racism for sale. No one should seek to profit from racism.”

We reached out to Baker Skateboards -- as well as Don “The Nuge” Nguyen -- so far, no word back from either.

Oh, come on! It is just a bit of fun and it is not a hate message at all. In fact, it is more accepting than anything else.
Anyone who has traveled to East Asian countries where there is little to no race differential, will tell you that derogatory statements and opinions about other races are more than commonplace. In fact, it is part of the culture. Even in 2012 a mixed race child is treated like an animal, or worse. It doesn't matter if the child is part white, black, brown, they are treated just as bad. And if the child is an East Asian mix, like half Korean half Japanese, they are treated as lesser people - Especially in Korea.
There are billions of people on this planet today who have never seen, much less met, an individual of a race of a different color in person. As unbelievable as that sounds in 2012, it's absolutely true. Racism? Xenophobia? Oh my. We are amateurs here in America when it comes to that. Rank amateurs.
So, the Asian American Justice Center can just go spit. In America we make fun of everyone, and if we make fun of you, we are counting you are part of us. It's not a slur, it's an acceptance. I don't complain when I hear gwailo or kwai lo muttered behind my back, so you shouldn't complain when we stick you in the General Li and have some good natured fun with it. It is, after-all, only good natured fun.

Asian drivers. If they were really going for racism they'd have spelled it "Hazard".

There's really nothing wrong with it except for the fact it's not really funny or clever. It would be nice to know WHY they made the shirt in the first place. It just seems so random. Had to be a reason behind it. So before everyone jumps on the racist bandwagon, it would be nice to hear what they have to say about it first.

Wat in the world does this have to do with skate boards or skate boarding?

The shirt is offensive. I have t-shirts with pictures and slogans but would never wear one that could hurt somebody's feelings.

Pales in comparison to some of the hilarious "Engrish" shirts you can buy in China.

Everybody knows that Baker rips off other company likeness because they have no originality of their own. It is really funny though. What happened to free speech, or free expression? I think the world has gotten out of hand.
