Montee Ball Investigation

Madison Police Dept.

CAUGHT IN A LIE

8/4/2012 3:40 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

0802_montee_hall_article_APThe Madison Police Department straight up LIED to the media about its investigation into the Montee Ball attack ... and tried to throw TMZ under the bus ... but their plan has backfired ... big time.

TMZ broke the story ... the Madison Police Department HAD launched an investigation into tips that Ball and several of his UW football teammates beat up a man at a party on July 27 ... several days before Ball was attacked on campus. Cops told the media that the TMZ report was not true.

They lied.

After cops made their false statement, TMZ broke another story -- cops had interviewed the person who claimed he was brutally injured by Ball and others on July 27... and wanted to know if the alleged victim had ordered a retaliatory strike on Ball.

Today, cops released a NEW statement .... finally admitting what we had already told you -- that investigators were indeed looking into the July 27 event.

Cops have now said ... "Through information developed by detectives, [The Madison PD has] determined that there was a fight that occurred Friday night which involved UW students, members of the UW football team, and other individuals that were not affiliated with the University of Wisconsin's Athletics Department."

The statement continues, "We have also determined that Montee Ball was present at the location of that fight, but we have no information that leads us to believe that he had any involvement in that particular event."

We called the MPD for comment -- for some reason, they don't want to talk to us.

I said alot of football players were bullies and after a few drinks like to push people around, I was right. They beat up a guy last week, too bad the cops can't tell the truth

I said this the other day, I said it was probably payback for him and his teammates pushing someone around, and they got their payback and gave this brotha a beatdown and I was attacked for it. Well it looks like the Cops lied and I was right. Did anyone really think the big man on campus was jumped while just minding his own business?

Oh no!! You mean someone LIED about something the media did?? Oh my god!! How does it feel to be on the other end of a 'scandal' (such that it is!). Good for the cops!! Does it ever cross the media's mind (HA!!) that the cops do not have to check in with you hacks over everything they do??? Do you ever think that maybe the media could possibly screw up or compromise an investigation by 'reporting' on every nose wipe and/or butt scratch?? Funny how you never hear the media apologize for reporting something wrong!! I say hooray for the cops and to the media - BACK OFF!! and let them do their jobs!

Oh my god, shut up. The police in our city do an excellent job at protecting the citizens of Madison, and you're talking about them like they are a bunch of gambling, crooked cops. Is it entirely possible that maybe they didn't WANT the details of their investigation plastered all over a celebrity gossip website? Grow up

Hint to TMZ.. You portray yourselves as juvenile, unprofessional and uninformed when you attack our public law enforcement agencies who we as a society DEMAND they keep meddling ambulance chasers (like TMZ) from ruining an investigation... Like Bigtime ruin..

Shouldn't your headline read, "Madison Police Department Lied to an Increasingly Sleazy and Sloppy Gossip Site to Protect an Ongoing Investigation"?

Cops...Is there some group that put dumb-ass drops in the water of every cop shop in the States? Same story, different department, over and over...

Like this is news. Police lie to people every day, all the time... When you're little you're taught never to question the police and to always do what they say because they're there to protect and serve. Those days are long gone unless you want to redefine what it is exactly that they're protecting and serving (themselves and their conviction rate/job security). To them it's justified to lie because even though the law says they shouldn't, they consider everyone GUILTY until proven innocent. -A white male.

I didn't know police were OBLIGATED to share any details of an ongoing case with the media, even when asked. Especially when the media then feels as if they need to share the info with the public, who could be potential suspects or witnesses.

It's not like this blog hasn't broadcast things related to ongoing investigations that were ethically questionable, like revealing the identity of a victim using dubiously obtained pictures, etc.

So let me get this straight... The police lied to the public about an investigation. Sounds to me like they are doing their job. Hey TMZ, get over yourself...

TMZ actually cares about UW - Madison? Astonishing.

I now eagerly await TMZ's new story about Aaron Rodgers' latest "friend" - girl or otherwise. Now that would be an interesting story.
