Randy Travis

Locals RUSHED to Jail

to Give Him $$$, Clothes

8/9/2012 7:05 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

0809_gary_randy_travis_APRandy Travis was NOT wearing a Texas Longhorns hat at the time of his naked arrest ... it was a gift from a local attorney who rushed to the jail the second he heard the country star was in trouble.

TMZ has learned ... moments after word got out about Travis' arrest, several locals raced over to the jail to help out -- one man posted Randy's cash bond and another man offered legal services right away.

The lawyer was Gary Corley ... who tells TMZ the area around Sherman, TX is a close-knit community where the people take care of each other ... and he wanted to "do the humanitarian thing" and help Travis.

0809_randy_travis_mug_subassetWhen Corley arrived to the jail, he briefly met with Randy, offered his services, and told him about the legion of photographers waiting outside the jail to shoot the singer.

Corley tells us he was wearing his Texas hat at the time, but decided Randy probably needed it more ... and literally gave him the cap right off of his head so the singer could shield his face from shutterbugs on his way out.

We're told Corley had a car waiting for Travis in case he wanted a ride ... but the man who posted  Randy's cash bond had already arranged for transportation ... so Randy went with his money man.

So far, we're told Randy has not officially hired an attorney ... but Corley says he'll be there if he needs him.

Hey Now

There's a fine line between compassion and enabling. He needs to face the consequences of his actions by ponying up for his own bail. Lord knows he should be able to afford it.

Does lawyer Corley rush to the jail and bring things to everyone-homeless, for instance. People that could really use the help. Or does he just rush to the jail when it's someone famous, and knows he will get in the press?

oh ye who have never sinned.

The intoxicated charge is minor (usually a max of 6 months in jail), but telling a policeman you will kill him is a felony and carries about 6 years in prison. What's wrong with this picture? The potential for killing a person goes up exponentially when an intoxicated driver is involved and said driver gets up tp six months?

Randy is a good ole boy, probably drinkin moonshine. Moonshine has that strip naked, ram your car into things, fight with the cops effect.

what he needs is mental help. Praying that he gets it before he kills himself or someone else.

Powering around a lethal weapon while intoxicated is a very bad crime. We are lucky no one was maimed or killed by this criminal. That being said, let's get this guy some help so he stops his dangerous behavior.
